King Charles sparked smiles during a recent visit to Northern Ireland after a light-hearted moment involving a cake-cutting attempt that didn’t quite go to plan. During an engagement at the Warehouse Community Centre in Newtownards, County Down, the 77-year-old monarch and Queen Camilla took part in serving a chocolate cake that had been prepared with help from the King himself.

Although the ceremonial cutting was met with applause, things quickly became a little chaotic when the plate beneath the cake shifted as the King was trying to cut it, nearly sending the dessert sliding off the table. The King and Queen Camilla both laughed as he was struggling to cut it and it fell off the knife.

The moment prompted friendly humour from a bystander who joked that the messy cake slice might be better suited to being eaten on crackers.

Laughing along, the King responded: “You have to have that for your lunch.”

He then took a closer look at the sprinkle-covered cake and added warmly, “It does look very good,” clearly amused by how the moment had unfolded.

Earlier in the visit, Charles had joined staff in the kitchen, where he helped mix a gluten-free chocolate sponge. Kitchen staff praised his efforts, with head chef Dawn Stewart later saying she was “very impressed” by his mixing skills.

The Warehouse Open Centre was founded in 2009, providing the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme to young people aged 14 to 25 years old in the Ards and North Down area.

It is a community-led social enterprise in County Down which is focused on tackling food waste and food insecurity through surplus food redistribution and free meal provision.

Last week, King Charles and Queen Camilla carried out a three-day visit to Northern Ireland. They began in Belfast at Thompson Dock, meeting organisers and performers ahead of the upcoming Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann festival celebrating traditional Irish music. They then visited Titanic Distillers, where they learned about whisky production and met staff at the historic site.

The King visited W5 LIFE to see digital skills programmes in action, including AI and robotics initiatives supporting young people into tech careers. Queen Camilla visited Fane Street Primary School, meeting pupils and staff at the multicultural school and joining an assembly.

Both also received the First Minister and deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland at Hillsborough Castle.
