A pedestrian killed as he was hit by a car outside a convention in Melbourne has been identified.
Volkan Aksoy, 20, had just left Supanova Comic-Con at the Flemington Showgrounds in Ascot Vale, Melbourne, when he was hit by a Toyota Echo about 5pm on Saturday.
Aksoy died at the scene while another 20-year-old man was rushed to hospital with serious lower body injuries.
A third man was uninjured but was also taken to hospital for observation.
Aksoy’s mother remembered him as a “kind and compassionate young man”.
“He had a beautiful spirit, he was very much loved and will be profoundly missed by all who knew him,” she told 9News.
“His life was taken far too soon, there’s no other way to describe it.”
Police allege the car crossed several lanes of traffic before it mounted the curb and hit the men.
The car then continued down the footpath for more than 100 metres before it came to a stop and the driver was detained by an off-duty police officer and a bystander.

“We were all taken by surprise, it screeched, bang, within two, three seconds, it just all happened instantly,” witness Rory Rouillon said.
“And then hearing screaming saying, ‘stay right there, get back’.”
Detective Inspector Craig McEvoy said “nothing suggests” the crash was due to a medical episode and police are investigating all possibilities.
“Obviously speed, alcohol, drugs and driver distraction will all form part of the investigation,” McEvoy said.
“To get across the lane, up onto the footpath and then travel 120 metres along the footpath in between a two-metre-high fence, trees and power poles is extremely rare.”
“I assume people were leaving at that time … It’s so sad that one person has lost their life, but it could have been a lot worse.”
The alleged driver, 33-year-old learner driver Awer Dau appeared before court on Sunday charged with dangerous driving causing death and culpable driving.

He did not apply for bail and will be remanded in custody until his next appearance on September 15.
The extended time between appearances was granted to the police prosecutor who told the court a number of investigations had to be undertaken to build a case against Dau.
That includes a toxicological report, forensic examinations of the Toyota, reviewing CCTV, gathering witness statements and reconstructing the crash, according to the Herald Sun.
The court heard Dau was allegedly on bail at the time of the crash.
Thousands of people attended the second day of the convention on Sunday, where floral tributes were left and a minute’s silence was observed for Aksoy.
