The shocking details of a 5-month-old infant’s death have sparked outrage in Indiana after court documents revealed his mother allegedly dropped him “at least five times” before searching the internet for how to cover up his injuries.
Chantel Cunningham, 24, of Shipshewana, faces level 1 felony charges of murder and neglect of a dependent resulting in death, following a grueling, months-long investigation by the Indiana State Police.
Emergency medical services rushed to a Shipshewana residence on the morning of April 6, 2026, after receiving reports of an unresponsive infant. First responders found 5-month-old Greyson Lee Cunningham lifeless, reports People magazine.
Despite life-saving efforts, the infant was pronounced dead, triggering an immediate investigation into the cause of his sudden passing.
A crucial breakthrough in the case came when digital forensics teams analyzed Cunningham’s cell phone.

According to charging documents, investigators discovered a highly suspicious search query timed just before emergency services were notified.
At 10:50 a.m. on the morning of her son’s death, Cunningham allegedly searched: “how do I quickly heal a baby bruise.”
The internet search directly contradicted her initial timeline of events and suggested an awareness of the baby’s severe physical trauma before she called for emergency assistance.
When initially questioned by detectives, Cunningham attempted to blame the incident on a chronic medical condition. She claimed she suffered from sudden seizures, which caused her to lose consciousness and inadvertently drop the baby.
However, investigators quickly dismantled this defense. Medical records revealed that Cunningham had deliberately stopped taking her prescribed anti-seizure medication months earlier, in January.
As police pressed for clarity, Cunningham’s story allegedly fell apart.
In a final interview with law enforcement, she shifted her narrative, admitting to investigators that she had dropped her infant son “at least five different times” that morning in various areas of the home, including a fall where the baby landed face-first.
The final autopsy report definitively ruled out any possibility of an accidental fall. A forensic pathologist concluded that baby Greyson died from blunt-impact head trauma.
The medical examination exposed a horrifying catalog of injuries, including severe, massive skull fractures; deep scalp hemorrhaging; bleeding behind and around both eyes, and multiple bone fractures surrounding the eye sockets.
Medical experts stated that the sheer volume and severity of the fractures occurred simultaneously, a pattern entirely inconsistent with a typical accidental drop.
The coroner officially ruled the manner of death a homicide. Following the conclusion of the autopsy and digital analysis, Indiana State Police arrested Cunningham on July 29, 2026.
She is currently being held without bond as prosecutors prepare their case. Under Indiana law, a Level 1 felony conviction carries a maximum prison sentence of up to 40 years per count.
