A man is on the run after allegedly attacking his brother and elderly parents with an axe at a home east of Melbourne.
Police are looking for Peter O’Ryan, 48, after his father, mother and brother were left with “extreme” injuries following the alleged assault inside the family home in the Gippsland town of Tyers about 12.30pm on Saturday.

The trio managed to call emergency services after O’Ryan alleged fled the property.
Police believe O’Ryan allegedly attacked his brother Paul, 47, first before turning on his 76-year-old dad, Keith, and 74-year-old mum, Janine.
Paul and Keith were airlifted to hospital in Melbourne with life-threatening injuries.
Janine was also hospitalised with critical injuries.
Police believe the alleged assault may have unfolded following an argument.
The family have lived in the home for more than 30 years.
Neighbours told 9News they have had issues with the accused in the past and have been forced to call police multiple times.
Detective Senior Sergeant Rod Findlay told reporters their injuries are “very extreme” and have required serious treatment.
He believes they may have been assaulted with a blunt axe or tomahawk.
“I’ve been working in family violence for a long time, this is some of the most serious offending I have ever seen,” Findlay told reporters on Sunday.

“It is really extreme offending, we don’t see much worse than this.”
All three remain in a critical but stable condition in intensive care at Melbourne’s The Alfred hospital.
Two of the injured remain unconscious.
A large-scale search is currently under way in the area to locate him and a warrant is out for his arrest.
O’Ryan – who has no fixed address and is known to live in the bush – was last seen wearing a black and mustard jacket and carrying a black backpack, police said.
He is Caucasian and described as being of medium build with dark grey hair.
Findlay said O’Ryan frequents the Tyers, Morwell and Traralgon areas.

Detectives have released an image of O’Ryan in the hope a member of the public recognises him.
Police warn he may still be armed with an axe and handsaw and people are advised to call authorities if they spot him.
He is also known to take refuge in abandoned properties or outhouses.
Findlay urged O’Ryan to contact police.
“We are working furiously to try and bring him into custody to try and ensure everyone’s safe,” he said.
“I’d encourage him to call us, I’d encourage him to walk into a police station and give [himself] up.
