My mother-in-law slammed the table and shouted: Don’t think that just because you bring money home, you have the right to insult this family! Get out!

PART 1: THE SYMPHONY OF PARTIALITY AND FALSE PRIDE

In a certain poor street corner, where narrow alleys always reeked of the dampness of decaying tiled roofs and the wind whistled through old wooden window frames, there stood an ancient yet decaying house. That place had once been the pride of a long-standing, educated lineage, but now it retained only a hollow, rotten shell fueled by the mother-in-law’s false sense of dignity.

The daughter-in-law had stepped into that house when she was barely in her twenties. She did not hail from a wealthy aristocratic family, nor did she possess a massive dowry; she had only a pair of diligent hands and a patient heart. Yet from her very first day as a daughter-in-law, she was met with sneers and contemptuous side-eyes from the mother-in-law. In the mother-in-law’s eyes, she was merely a “coarse,” “lowly” creature unworthy of crossing the threshold of a family that once held prestige in this corner of the street.

The husband—the son the mother always proudly boasted of as intellectual and talented—was in truth nothing more than a spineless man, lazy and forever immersed in wild daydreams of striking it rich. Every financial burden in the house—from utilities and daily grocery expenses to the skyrocketing loan interests caused by the husband’s failed reckless ventures—fell squarely on the shoulders of the daughter-in-law.

Every day, the daughter-in-law had to wake up at five in the morning, rushing to the wholesale market in the central district, working continuously for sixteen hours until her hands were calloused and her back ached terribly. Every single coin she scraped together from her sweat was quietly handed back to the mother-in-law to cover living expenses and keep the family from being hunted down by loan sharks.

Yet, those silent sacrifices were never acknowledged. At every meal, the mother-in-law made a habit of mocking and criticizing everything from how she picked up food to the way she walked. The mother-in-law constantly bragged to the neighbors that her family had “taken pity” by welcoming such a poor, humble daughter-in-law, and that her working to earn money and contribute to the household was a mandatory duty to “repay the grace” of the husband’s family.

PART 2: THE UNRAVELING OF LIES

The injustice reached its breaking point when the younger brother—the mother-in-law’s pampered golden child—returned after years of idle debauchery. To save face for her darling son in front of friends, the mother-in-law did not hesitate to force the daughter-in-law to withdraw all her savings, which she had intended to use for her ailing father’s medical treatment in the countryside.

To the mother-in-law, the health of a poor father in a distant rural region could never compare to her darling son’s designer clothes or expensive car. When the daughter-in-law begged her, hoping she would spare a small portion for her father’s hospital fees, she received only coldness and venomous taunts that she was “calculating” and “taking her husband’s family’s money to care for outsiders.”

For months, the daughter-in-law had to live while exhausting every ounce of her strength, silently yielding step by step. But human endurance has its limits. The peak of the tragedy unfolded on a freezing winter evening when the daughter-in-law returned home after an exhausting day, only to receive a text message from the hospital stating her father was in critical condition due to a lack of surgical funds.

Stepping into the house, she was horrified to discover the mother-in-law and her two children joyfully discussing plans to use every penny of the money she had painstakingly borrowed to host a grand longevity celebration party for the mother at the most luxurious restaurant in the corner of the street.

Unable to remain silent any longer, the daughter-in-law stepped forward, trembling as she pulled out the stack of debt records and financial logs she had shouldered for the family over the past five years, calmly yet firmly demanding that the mother-in-law return her father’s medical funds. She exposed the truth that this house, these daily meals, and even the luxurious clothes they were wearing were all bought with the sweat and blood of her alone, not from any hollow “prestige” of their family.

Her truthful words struck like a bucket of icy water flung directly at the mother-in-law’s warped sense of pride in front of the children. Shame turned into a wild, raging fury.

The mother-in-law’s face distorted with outrage. She stood up abruptly, her bloodshot eyes threatening to tear the daughter-in-law apart, as she grabbed a thick porcelain teacup from the table and slammed it hard against the wooden surface with a sharp “BANG.” Hot tea splashed everywhere, and the ceramic cup shattered into sharp, jagged pieces.

She pointed a direct finger at her daughter-in-law, her chilling roar shaking the entire old house:

“Don’t you think that just because you bring home money, you have the right to insult this family! Get out!”

The husband standing beside her offered no words of intervention, only coldly turning his gaze away. The daughter-in-law looked at the broken shards under her feet, then gazed up at the cruel, ungrateful faces before her. A bitter smile curled on her lips. Not a single tear fell anymore. She slowly bent down, gathered up her debt files and ownership papers, collected all her remaining capital, and decisively turned her back to walk out the heavy wooden door through the freezing, rainy night, officially leaving that family to drown in their unfixable debts and collapse.
