Elaine Hendrix missed the “Dancing with the Stars” live show on Tuesday night due to an injury.
The actress, who is one of the remaining nine contestants on the show, took to Instagram and shared a video of herself from a hospital room.
She said that her injury was a result of something that happened last week during “Wicked” night, when she and her pro dance partner Alan Bersten performed a contemporary dance to “Defying Gravity.” The dance earned them their highest scores of the season.
‘Dancing with the Stars’ shake-up: Who went home and who’s joining as guest judge?

“Dancing with the Stars” returns for its 20th anniversary. Cohosted by Alfonso Ribeiro and Julianne Hough, with judges Carrie Ann Inaba, Bruno Tonioli and Derek Hough, the ballroom welcomes 14 new celebrities for their first live performance. TUESDAY, SEPT. 16 (8:00-10:00 p.m. EDT) on ABC.

“Obviously I’m not in the ballroom,” she said. “I injured my ribs during ‘Defying Gravity’ and today, they just seized up and I couldn’t move. They brought me to the hospital, but the doctor said that with a day or two of rest, I should be able to continue and that’s exactly what I want to do.”
Hendrix added, “I want to dance, I want to keep doing this, so Alan is holding down the fort, he’s amazing, he’s awesome.”
She shared how “excited” she was to show off their routine this week — an Argentine Tango to “Bad to the Bone” — but said that audiences will be able to get to see the dance that was filmed from their rehearsal and that fans will still get to vote.
“Just know that I love you all, thank you for the support,” she said. “Please vote for us because I want to see you next week.”
‘Dancing with the Stars’ season 33 finale: Who won the Mirrorball trophy?
During the top of the live taping of the show, “Dancing with the Stars” hosts Alfonso Ribeiro and Julianne Hough announced that Hendrix had suffered an injury and that she and Bersten still needed viewers’ votes to advance.
A rehearsal video of Hendrix and Bersten in the dance studio also showed Hendrix reacting to pain in her ribs during a dance move.
Things took a turn when they were rehearsing in the ballroom and Hendrix froze mid-dance.
Bersten said, “Elaine froze and said she can’t move, she can’t breathe. Something happened with her rib.”
Video then showed Hendrix being taken out of the ballroom on a stretcher with medics around her.
After Ribeiro explained the rules of the show, which state that contestants could be judged by audiences at home and scored by the judges on the basis of their last full rehearsal, Hendrix’s and Bersten’s rehearsal video for their “Bad to the Bone” dance was shown.
Afterward, judges Derek Hough, Carrie Ann Inaba, Bruno Tonioli and guest judge Cheryl Burke shared their thoughts.
“I’m a huge fan of Elaine,” Burke told Bersten. “I feel like previous weeks you have been underrated a little bit. I want you to know that your partnership is beautiful … As far as moving forward, which I’m happy to hear she can, it’s important to work on the transitions — that’s more important than the tricks. Great work.”
Bersten and Hendrix earned 8s across the board bringing them to a score of 32.
This is not the first time in “Dancing with the Stars” history that a couple has been judged on a rehearsal or outside of the ballroom due to an illness or injury.
During season 30 of the show, Cody Rigsby and Cheryl Burke performed separately and virtually after Rigsby tested positive for COVID-19.
Melissa Rycroft was also injured during season 15 of the competition show’s All Star season. She went on to win the mirrorball trophy that year.
