Don’t tell your secrets to your hairdresser—unless you want them… exposed!

The BBC has officially “teased” its latest television project, The Hairdresser Mysteries—a village-set crime series that promises to be an unmissable treat for loyal fans of Midsomer Murders. With a nostalgic aesthetic that captures the essence of the 1970s, this six-part series is set to offer a fresh perspective, blending cozy atmosphere with gripping, intricate twists.

A Gathering of Promising Talent

Leading the cast is the talented actress Sally Phillips (best known for her role in Bridget Jones). She portrays Lily Petal, a hairstylist who decides to leave behind the hustle and bustle of city life in search of serenity in a small village, where she opens a charming salon on a cobblestone street.

By Lily’s side is Clary Coombs, a sharp-witted and analytical assistant portrayed by Charlotte Jordan (famous for Coronation Street). The dynamic between Lily and Clary is already being compared to the classic duo: the “Watson to her Shear-lock Holmes” of the hairdressing world.

The supporting cast is equally impressive, featuring notable names such as Ben Castle-Gibb (from You) as the passionate PC Adam Watson—who is currently developing deep feelings for the assistant, Clary; and Sunetra Sarker (from Ackley Bridge) as Wincey Evans, the village’s resident source of all gossip. Furthermore, the series boasts the participation of Clive Rowe as Lonnie, the flamboyant manager of the local charity shop, alongside veteran actor Guy Henry (from Holby City) as Race Runard, the village’s eccentric antiques dealer.

The series will also welcome prestigious guest stars, most notably Wendi Peters as Gloria Crudd. This character arrives in the village hoping to start a new life with her ice cream parlour, but according to the synopsis, her mysterious past will soon catch up with her.

Where Secrets Get “Trimmed”

The most intriguing aspect of The Hairdresser Mysteries lies in its unique premise. In this small village, Lily Petal’s salon is more than just a place for beauty; it inadvertently becomes the hub for every local secret and shocking revelation. After all, people tend to confide everything to their hairdresser.

The show’s official synopsis states:

“Everyone tells their hairdresser everything and soon she becomes the hub of her new village’s secrets and revelations. Using her own brand of uncannily developed hairdressing intuitive, empathy and understanding, Lily begins to solve the mysteries of the village.”

A Golden Standard of Production

Beyond its compelling premise, the series is a collaboration of top-tier creative minds. Crafted under the pen of award-winning screenwriter Jim Cartwright, and combined with the expertise of executive producers like Will Trotter (Father Brown) and Oliver Kent (Sanditon), The Hairdresser Mysteries is expected to set a new standard for the “cosy crime” genre.

Scheduled to premiere in July on the BBC, this series is more than just a procedural; it is the journey of Lily Petal, who uses the intuition and empathy of a skilled professional to untangle complex knots and expose the truths lurking behind the village’s quiet facade. For audiences seeking a show that is just dramatic enough to keep them curious, yet calm enough to unwind, this is undoubtedly the title to look forward to on your TV schedule this summer.
