On Monday morning, recovery crews officially launched the painstaking search at the Baton Rouge North Landfill, with the FBI joining local authorities in one of the largest recovery efforts the city has undertaken.

Massive Recovery Operation Begins

According to Baton Rouge Police, investigators have narrowed the search to a specific section of the landfill after weeks of planning.

Even so, officials say the operation remains incredibly challenging.

The North Landfill spans more than 400 acres and receives approximately 1,600 tons of waste every day from hundreds of garbage trucks, making the recovery effort both time-consuming and complex.

Search teams are working in protective Tyvek suits and specialized equipment while facing extreme summer heat and the possibility of heavy rain.

“This is not going to happen overnight,” officials said, emphasizing that a recovery effort of this scale requires patience and precision.

The FBI is working alongside the Baton Rouge Police Department during the search.

Fire personnel and additional emergency agencies are also assisting as investigators treat the landfill as an active crime scene.

Authorities have even restricted airspace over the area to protect the integrity of the investigation.

Suspect Remains Silent

Police say Maurice Parms, 51, who is charged with first-degree m-rd3r, has refused to cooperate with investigators.

According to officials, Parms has provided no assistance in locating the missing teenager.

Investigators believe Ja’Derrius was k!lled after a confrontation involving a 16-year-old girl Parms allegedly knew.

Court documents state the disagreement centered on Parms’ behavior toward the teenager before the situation turned violent.

Investigators Believe Teen Was Beaten

According to the arrest warrant, evidence suggests Ja’Derrius was beaten to d3ath before his body was allegedly concealed and later disposed of.

Police believe his remains may have been placed inside a garbage container that was subsequently emptied into the North Landfill during routine waste collection.

That information allowed investigators to narrow their search area to a little more than half an acre inside the sprawling facility.

Family Awaits Answers

Ja’Derrius was last seen on June 5, and despite weeks of investigation, his family has still not been able to bring him home.

Officials say the primary goal of the landfill search is not only to recover the teenager’s remains so his loved ones can finally lay him to rest, but also to preserve any evidence that could strengthen the criminal case against the suspect.

As crews continue the painstaking search, authorities say the operation could take weeks unless investigators make an earlier breakthrough.
