No One Can Ever Replace Their Mum: Elaine Gee’s Husband Breaks Silence on the Heartbreak of Losing His Beloved Wife in Horrific Crash
A Tasmanian community is in mourning after a much‑loved nurse and mother was killed driving home from work by a man police say was fleeing a domestic violence stabbing.
Elaine Gee, 39, from Winkleigh, was heading home from her nursing shift at Launceston General Hospital on Friday afternoon when a blue Skoda crossed into her lane and struck her Nissan Navara head‑on at Legana.
Police said a man was fleeing a domestic violence stabbing incident down the West Tamar Highway when his car hit Elaine’s Nissan.
The man, who died at the scene, was allegedly the perpetrator of a stabbing in Exeter minutes earlier, in which a woman known to him sustained serious wounds.
Elaine was rushed to hospital and spent two days fighting for life, but her injuries were too severe.
In a tribute shared by her husband Rodney, he said he had been forced to say a final goodbye to “my best friend and beautiful wife, Elaine”.
He said their two young sons also had to farewell “their amazing mum”, describing the day as “the worst of our family’s lives”.
“There are no clever words for it. It’s unacceptable and unfair,” he said.
Rodney said it would take their entire community — family, friends, teachers and everyone who knew Elaine — to help guide the boys through the years ahead.
“Tell them the stories. Remind them who their mum was. Pull them into line when they need it, and stand beside them when life gets hard,” he said.
“I can be their dad, but no one can ever replace their mum.
“We will always love you, babe.”
A GoFundMe described Elaine’s death as a “senseless act of violence”, saying she was “completely innocent, simply in the wrong place at the wrong time”.
Elaine leaves behind her two young sons, aged six and ten, her husband Rodney — her high‑school sweetheart — as well as her mother Sue and brother Andy.
The fundraiser said the couple had been together since they were 15, calling them “best friends” and “soulmates”.
“What was supposed to be Elaine’s 40th birthday will now be her funeral,” the tribute reads.
Elaine worked as a nurse for 20 years, starting in surgical wards before moving into patient flow management — a role her colleagues say required rare determination and compassion.
In recent years she led rural flow improvement projects, helping ensure vulnerable patients weren’t left waiting or overlooked.
“She has left behind a legacy of genuine care and relentless advocacy,” the fundraiser says. “Our community is forever better for her commitment to people in need.”
Elaine was also a talented showjumper in her local community.
The GoFundMe aims to support funeral costs and help Elaine’s family as Rodney becomes the sole income earner while grieving with their boys.
Tasmania Police say the woman stabbed in Exeter remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
