During Strictly Come Dancing’s Halloween night, fans noticed that hosts Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman did not wear Halloween costumes like in previous years. The reason behind this choice is truly shocking and evokes deep empathy.

The cause stems from a terrifying experience in Claudia Winkleman’s past. She witnessed her eight-year-old daughter, Matilda, catch fire while wearing a Halloween costume. The incident left Matilda with severe burns, and Claudia described it as a “life-changing” moment for her.

Speaking about the incident for the first time on BBC Watchdog, Winkleman recalled: “I was talking to somebody, and then I just heard her scream. She just screamed ‘Mummy’ and when I turned around, she was on fire. Everyone was screaming… I felt like she was on fire for hours, but the surgeon said that definitely wasn’t the case—it was probably just seconds. But she went up, is the only way I know how to describe it. It was not like any fire I had seen before.”

She continued: “We couldn’t put her out—like if your shirt caught fire, I could put it out. But the tights… they kept coming back to life. It was like those horrific birthday candles that you blow out, and they flare up again.”

On how serious Matilda’s burns were, Claudia added: “It’s life-changing, but not life-defining. It was definitely life-changing for me. I can’t remember life before it.”

Winkleman also delivered a strong warning to other parents about costumes: “I would like parents, just on Halloween, to think carefully about what they’re putting their kids in, because I didn’t, and it cost us.”

Because of this traumatic experience, she chose not to wear a Halloween costume on Strictly Come Dancing, a decision that surprised and deeply resonated with fans.
