Multiple people have been shot near a popular festival in the US state of Ohio.

Authorities were called to reports of a shooting near the Old West End Festival in Toledo on Saturday local time.

When officers arrived, they discovered several people had been wounded by gunfire.

Officials have not confirmed how many people were injured or released details about their conditions, but did confirm many had been taken to hospital.

Police are now working to establish what led to the shooting and identify those responsible.

The Old West End Festival is a two-day celebration held in Toledo’s historic district featuring live music, food vendors, shopping and home tours.

There is no word how many people were attending the event at the time of the incident, but historically, attendance has ranged between 20,000 and 30,000 visitors over the course of the weekend.

No arrests have been announced, and the investigation remains ongoing.
