JUST IN: TEARS OUTSIDE DOWNING STREET..! – Keir Starmer fought back emotion as he announced his resignation as British Prime Minister after just two years in power.
Keir Starmer Announces Resignation as British Prime Minister in Emotional Downing Street Address
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his resignation on Monday in an emotional statement outside 10 Downing Street, saying he had accepted growing concerns within the Labour Party about his leadership and would step aside after just two years in office.

Fighting back tears during his address, Starmer said he had done his best to build “a fairer Britain” but acknowledged that many in his party no longer believed he was the right person to lead Labour into the next general election.
“I have heard the answer from my party and I accept it with good grace,” he said.
Starmer revealed that he had spoken with King Charles earlier in the day and asked Labour’s National Executive Committee to begin the process of selecting a new leader. According to the timetable outlined, nominations will open on July 9, with the contest expected to conclude before Parliament returns in September.
Although he announced his intention to step down, Starmer said he would remain Prime Minister until a successor is chosen.
The most emotional moment came when the 63-year-old paid tribute to his family. His voice cracked as he spoke about his wife Victoria and their children.
“Being the best husband I can to my fantastic wife Vic, who has been a rock by my side through good times and bad,” Starmer said.
“And being the best dad that I can to my beautiful children, who are my pride and joy.”
He then embraced his wife before returning inside Number 10.
The resignation comes amid growing speculation about a leadership challenge from Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, who recently secured victory in the Makerfield by-election and is widely expected to seek the Labour leadership.
Burnham, a veteran politician and former cabinet minister, has argued that Labour faces a “final chance to change” after a series of disappointing election results and declining public support.
Starmer’s premiership, which began in July 2024, has been marked by policy reversals, ministerial resignations and mounting criticism from both within and outside his party. Recent local election setbacks in England, Scotland and Wales intensified pressure on the Prime Minister, leading many commentators to question his political future.
While Burnham has yet to formally launch a leadership campaign, British media reports suggest he could reshape Labour’s top team if elected, potentially replacing Chancellor Rachel Reeves while retaining Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood.
As Labour prepares for another leadership contest, Britain now faces a period of political uncertainty, with a new prime minister expected to be in place before Parliament reconvenes later this year.
