King Charles is hopeful that Prince Harry’s surprising return to the U.K. could eventually help heal one of the royal family’s deepest rifts.

As PEOPLE exclusively revealed, Harry, 41, and Meghan Markle, 45, are relocating to Britain for an extended period with Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, who are enrolled in school there and will begin classes in September. The family will establish a private, non-royal home base while retaining their Montecito, Calif., residence.

For Charles, 77, who continues to undergo cancer treatment, the move brings his younger son and two grandchildren back from the other side of the globe — and raises the possibility of something he has long hoped for: reconciliation between Harry and his brother Prince William.

“He will want to see his sons together over time,” a source close to the royal household tells PEOPLE in this week’s cover story. “This is the best opportunity we have seen in recent years.”

The King’s relationship with Harry has quietly improved in recent months. In July, father and son reunited privately at Highgrove, where Charles saw Archie and Lilibet for the first time in more than four years.

“That was a real positive,” an ally tells PEOPLE.

Now, with Harry and his family preparing to spend an extended period in Britain, those opportunities for connection will no longer have to be squeezed into brief visits from California.

“The King would love to have Harry around,” says the source close to the royal household.

The hope carries particular poignancy given the estrangement between Harry and his older brother, Prince William, 44. In his 2023 memoir, Spare, Harry recalled a moment after Prince Philip’s funeral in 2021 when Charles pleaded with his sons: “Please, boys, don’t make my final years a misery.”

Five years later, Charles’ desire to see his sons find their way back to each other remains.

But Harry’s return should not be mistaken for a sign that the royal family’s fractures have already healed.

Despite recent progress, Harry’s relationship with his father remains complicated. Charles learned of Harry and Meghan’s plans only days before the news became public — a detail that underscores the distance that still exists between father and son.

And William is another matter entirely.

While Harry has repeatedly spoken about wanting reconciliation with his family, several sources tell PEOPLE the brothers remain in “no contact,” with the Prince of Wales showing no sign that he is ready for a change.

When news of the Sussexes’ return broke, William and Kate Middleton were at Balmoral with Charles and other members of the royal family. The Prince and Princess of Wales made no public acknowledgment of the news.

Those close to the palace say the wounds run deep after years of public revelations from the Sussexes, including their 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, their Netflix docuseries and Harry’s memoir.

“It is going to be challenging for William. It will be very hard for him and Catherine,” a source in royal circles tells PEOPLE. “There is a deep sense of betrayal.”

The source says William and Kate are resisting any “knee-jerk reaction” to the Sussexes’ return and believes any reconciliation “will be a slow build.”

For now, William and Kate remain focused on their three children — Prince George, 13, Princess Charlotte, 11, and Prince Louis, 8 — their growing royal responsibilities and Kate’s continued recovery from cancer.

“They have suffered a lot,” a palace insider says. “They have been dutiful, doing what they do well and keeping the family together. Anything else, from their point of view, isn’t critical.”

What Harry’s return does change is the distance that has helped keep the two sides of the family apart.

Since Harry and Meghan stepped back as working royals and moved to North America in 2020, an ocean has made it relatively easy for the brothers to live separate lives. With the Sussexes in Britain — and Archie and Lilibet nearby — that estrangement may become harder to compartmentalize.

“It’s going to be very hard for the family to ignore their presence — the kids, especially,” says a California source.

That could eventually extend to the next generation. Amid their parents’ estrangement, Archie and Lilibet currently have no relationship with their cousins George, Charlotte and Louis.

No one expects proximity alone to erase years of hurt and mistrust, and neither side appears to have offered the apology the other believes is owed. But having both of his sons — and all five of his grandchildren — in the same country gives Charles something he has not had in years: the possibility for family relationships to develop without an ocean standing in the way.

Whether Harry and William take advantage of that remains to be seen.

“In time,” says one source, “there is a chance it will all heal.”
