The Duke and Duchess of Sussex celebrated their eighth wedding anniversary yesterday, with Harry gifting Meghan a peculiar statue that holds sentimental value

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle celebrated their eighth wedding anniversary yesterday, with the Duchess of Sussex posting 24 photos from their special day in 2018. After Meghan marked the day with a series of behind-the-scenes photos, she took to social media later in the day to share how her family were celebrating the day at home.

Taking to her Instagram stories, Meghan filmed Harry as he walked into the kitchen of their Montecito home holding a cake – which was the same flavour as their wedding cake – featuring four lit candles, as Harry, Meghan and their daughter Lilibet sang “Happy anniversary to Mama and Papa” to the tune of ‘Happy Birthday’.

Off camera, Lilibet can be heard saying “Blow them!”, prompting Harry and Meghan to blow out the candles and share a kiss while their daughter cheers in the background.

In the next video, Meghan films as she reveals the anniversary present Harry bought for her: a statue of two penguins leaning on each other. Meghan gasps as she opens the gift, while Harry can be heard chuckling.

Next to the gifts is a stack of paper, featuring photos of Harry and Meghan dressed as two penguins. Meghan can be heard explaining the gift to her children, as she said: “When Mama and Papa got engaged, we held a party with all of our friends and told them to come in animal onesies and we went as penguins.”

The Duchess explained that they went as the animals because they were “together for life”, before she turned around to give a kiss to her husband. Harry also wrote Meghan a card, and addressed it to “the one and only” on the envelope.

Also on her stories, Meghan shared a photo of them dressed in the penguin onesies in question, before posting another snap of them sharing a kiss in the kitchen over a lemon and elderflower cake. Handmade gifts from Archie and Lilibet were placed in the foreground, with a card addressed to ‘Mama and Papa’. In the background of the video, what appears to be their children’s schedules have been attached to a whiteboard.

As soon as the clock struck midnight in California and their wedding anniversary began, Meghan posted 24 new pics of their wedding day, as she divided the images into two posts: one reflecting on their ceremony during the day, and one looking back at their fun-filled wedding reception in the evening.

Accompanying the photos, Meghan simply captioned the post “Eight years ago today” with a sun and moon emoji, while also crediting photographer Chris Allerton who snapped their nuptials. The images looking back on the wedding ceremony, which are mostly in black and white, show the then-newlywed couple just after they said ‘I do’.

The photos show Harry and Meghan sharing a quiet moment in Windsor Castle before their reception, with others showing the behind-the-scenes moment of their official wedding portraits. In other photos, Meghan stands with her mother Doria and Harry hugs a wedding guest.

Also shown are photos of the couple delivering their wedding speeches, and raising a toast before sharing a kiss in front of their families and friends.

In the photos looking back at their wedding evening, Meghan posted 12 photos of the newlywed couple taking to the dancefloor for their first dance, before stealing a kiss as Meghan flashed her new wedding ring. Harry and Meghan tied the knot eight years ago, on May 19 2018, in a fairytale ceremony at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle.
