Police have given an update on a brutal assault that left a man lying for dead in a park after he confronted a group of partygoers.

A teenager has been charged after a brutal assault that left a man lying for dead in a park on Sydney’s northern beaches last month.

Emergency services found a 47-year-old man with severe facial injuries at James Meehan Reserve in Dee Why just after 11pm on May 29. The man lives in a unit opposite the park and called out to a group of partygoers to turn their music down.

When he went down to the reserve to ask them again, he was surrounded and bashed, according to police. He was taken to hospital in a stable condition.

“He believes he was lying there for an hour but we’re to investigate that properly,” Inspector Vanessa Robinson from NSW Police said at the time.

An 18-year-old man was charged on Sunday night with reckless wounding in company. He was refused bail and will face Manly Local Court on Monday.

Witnesses told 9 News the group “had a boom box” that was “really, really loud at one stage”, while another said the 47-year-old had been shouting from his balcony.

The incident rattled the local community, but Inspector Robinson was adamant the community was still safe.
