It’s supposed to be the happiest and most romantic day of your life, one of lifetime promises, cherished memories and special moments.
But Selena Gomez admits she was reduced to tears just weeks after exchanging vows with husband Benny Blanco on a 70-acre private estate in picturesque Santa Barbara.
The singer, actress and businesswoman looked radiant in a sleeveless ivory gown while marrying music producer Blanco – her fiancé of nine months – in front of friends and family members, among them pop superstar Taylor Swift, in September.
However, Gomez says the all-pervading, irrational fear that something catastrophically bad will always follow anything good led to her fearing the worst as she settled into married life.
Addressing guests at Fortune’s Most Powerful Women conference in Washington, DC on Wednesday, she said: ‘This is how I work personally, but something great happens in my life, I expect something bad to happen.
‘So instead of being present and saying, “Okay, wow, we’ve done a great thing,” which I do, I’m always thinking, “Okay, but this could all go away tomorrow, so how can I make sure that doesn’t happen?”

‘I would say that’s my biggest conflict sometimes when wonderful things happen. I got married and then I was sobbing because I was like, “I’m gonna die the next day.”
‘I just think that’s a little life thing.’
Despite the tears, Gomez also touched on her dreams of becoming a mother in an Instagram post shared little more than two weeks after tying the knot with Blanco.
The Emmy nominee made the remark while promoting season two of the Wizards Of Waverly place sequel series, Wizards Beyond Waverly Place, on Disney+.
Gomez famously starred on the original Emmy-winning Disney Channel show, which aired from 2007 to 2012, as teenage witch Alex Russo.
Taking to Instagram, the actress revealed that her character Alex is now a ‘mommy’ as she posted footage from the reboot’s season finale.
‘Alex Russo is a mommy,’ she wrote, before adding: ‘hopefully one day that’ll be me’
Last year, she revealed for the first time to Vanity Fair that she ‘can’t carry’ children due to medical reasons.

She said she had to ‘grieve’ her inability to become a mother naturally after years of battling lupus, a chronic autoimmune condition that causes the body to attack itself.
‘I haven’t ever said this,’ Gomez told the publication, ‘but I unfortunately can’t carry my own children.
‘I have a lot of medical issues that would put my life and the baby’s in jeopardy. That was something I had to grieve for a while.’
While she acknowledged her path to motherhood will be ‘different,’ Gomez said she is still as determined as ever to have a child of her own.
‘It’s not necessarily the way I envisioned it. I thought it would happen the way it happens for everyone,’ she said.

‘I’m in a much better place with that. I find it a blessing that there are wonderful people willing to do surrogacy or adoption, which are both huge possibilities for me.
‘It made me really thankful for the other outlets for people who are dying to be moms. I’m one of those people. I’m excited for what that journey will look like, but it’ll look a little different.’
The American star expressed that through surrogacy or adoption, the child will be ‘mine.’
‘At the end of the day, I don’t care. It’ll be mine. It’ll be my baby,’ she said
