Lewis Hamilton’s troubled Hungarian Grand Prix has gone into yet another twist, with the Ferrari boss earning a five-second time penalty for his speed in front of the green flags during yesterday’s race.
The seven-time champion of the Formula 1 drivers’ world championships started his Grand Prix race from P5 after collecting a three-place grid demotion in qualifying.
But now another FIA sanction has added to his afternoon at the Hungaroring.
Hamilton said on the radio, “Handing out penalties like crazy.”
Hamilton breached the pit lane speed limit during a scheduled stop and was penalised for the offence by the race stewards during the race.
Hamilton Penalized for Pit Lane Speeding
The FIA has issued a penalty to Hamilton for pit lane speeding.
One of the most frequent F1 penalties is pit lane speeding, as all circuits have a strict speed limit, ensuring the safety of the mechanics, marshals and team personnel.
The FIA automatically gave Hamilton a five-second penalty for exceeding that limit during his stop at the Hungaroring.
The fine follows a setback in the qualifying session, which had taken Hamilton to P5 at the end of the Hungarian GP.
Ferrari Faces Another Setback
Hamilton had been sporting a promising pace this overall Hungarian Grand Prix weekend, and Ferrari looked to be in with a shot at a podium finish against McLaren and Mercedes.
Qualifying second on Saturday, Hamilton got demoted three spots down the starting grid for obstructing Oscar Piastri in Q3.
The five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane on Sunday has thrown another spanner.
The British legend now has another disappointing afternoon to endure. Lando Norris, Max Verstappen, and Kimi Antonelli finish the race on the podium.
This is Norris’ second consecutive win at the Hungarian GP.
