Now, what appears to be a remarkable new addition has entered the fray – if the enthusiastic responses from both audiences and critics are anything to go by.
A ‘masterpiece’ biographical crime drama available on Netflix, and viewers simply cannot contain their praise. Branded as ‘binge-worthy’, ‘outstanding’ and a ‘powerhouse’ series, the programme has utterly captivated critics and audiences in equal measure.
Griselda is a six-episode limited series featuring Sofía Vergara in the lead role as Griselda Blanco, or ‘The Godmother of Cocaine’ – and audiences worldwide cannot stop praising her dark and compelling performance. The character represents a dramatic shift from the role for which she is best known – Gloria Delgado-Pritchett in the much-loved comedy drama Modern Family.
Griselda has been helmed by Colombian native Andrés Baiz and co-created by Ingrid Escajeda, Carlo Bernard, Doug Miro, and Eric Newman. Escajeda additionally serves as the series’ showrunner, while Newman and Vergara have joined as executive producers, reports the Liverpool Echo.

The series examines the life of the infamous Colombian drug lord more closely and first appeared on Netflix on January 25, 2024. Within just the opening week following its launch, Griselda reached the number one position in 90 nations and secured top spot in Netflix’s Global Weekly Top 10 TV (English) rankings.
The gripping crime drama’s official synopsis reads: “The savvy and ambitious Colombian businesswomen Griselda Blanco creates one of the most profitable cartels in history.”
Sofía Vergara is accompanied by Alberto Guerra, Martin Rodriguez, Juliana Aidén Martinez, Vanessa Ferlito, and Christian Tappan who complete an exceptionally gifted supporting ensemble.
Acclaim for Vergara’s portrayal has flooded in continuously since the programme arrived on the streaming platform, with the actress even securing a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie and a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress – Miniseries or Television Film.
Critics were unstinting in their appreciation of the series, with one commenting: “Although events have been heavily fictionalised, Griselda is a gloriously entertaining watch that’s made all the better by Vergara’s powerhouse performance as the titular crime boss.”
