Love Island star George Knight has hit back at criticism that he has been “everywhere but with his family” following his abrupt departure from the villa due to a private family health emergency.

The 28-year-old footballer’s time on the hit ITV2 reality show was short but memorable. Entering on the first night alongside fellow bombshell Yasmin Hadlow, the pair were immediately tasked with making one of the toughest decisions in the villa — dumping two fellow Islanders after just 24 hours. George ultimately chose to send home Samraj Toor while hoping to pursue a connection with Mica Harris, while Yasmin sent home Ellie Chadwick to explore things with Aidan Murphy.

However, George’s journey was cut short when a serious family matter forced him to leave the villa. In a statement to The Sun, he described the situation as “all very private,” confirming it involved “a health concern with a member of the immediate family.”

Since leaving the show, George has been spotted attending various events, including a recent ANOTR gig. Videos circulating on TikTok have drawn sharp criticism from viewers, who questioned why he appeared to be out enjoying himself rather than remaining at home with his family during the crisis.

Now, George has directly addressed the backlash in an interview with Capital, offering an unapologetic defense rooted in his family’s approach to adversity.

“The motto in the Knight household is, life continues. We crack on,” he said.

George acknowledged the seriousness of the family situation — “We’ve obviously got to address the elephant in the room, which we’re doing” — but emphasised the importance of maintaining balance.

“I still pursue and do things that I want to do that I’m interested in. Which naturally you might see because they’re not things I like to do in my room on my own. And I’m doing that around, you know, the roles and responsibilities that I have as a family member,” he explained.

The reality star made clear he had no intention of isolating himself. “So I’m not just gonna lock myself away and hide behind my phone and do nothing. I’m still gonna go out. I’m still gonna do loads of shopping, see my friends, go to events, watch the football.”

With England’s first World Cup match scheduled for Wednesday, George — a self-described “football obsessed” fan — confirmed he would be supporting the team with friends as usual. “Nothing changes. It’s just I need to be contactable for a certain few people, and at the moment I am.”

He concluded his comments with a firm message to critics: “So I’m balancing it all, and anyone that’s got an issue with that can do one.”

George’s response has sparked further debate online, with some praising his honesty and commitment to living life amid hardship, while others continue to question the optics of his public appearances so soon after the family emergency.
