Three men have been charged with murder in Darwin.

They allegedly assaulted 48-year-old Martin Wiberg at a Casuarina bus interchange on March 12.

Wiberg allegedly had his head stomped on, rendering him unconscious.

He died of his injuries in hospital two months later.

Tributes following his death describe Wiberg as a “lovely man” and a “very kind and gentle soul”, as well as a music lover, and a much loved member of the Darwin karaoke scene.

“He has always been someone who showed genuine character and wasn’t afraid to express himself through music,” one friend of Wiberg’s wrote to the Darwin karaoke community.

“For many of us, karaoke isn’t just about singing — it’s about community — and Martin has been part of that community for a long time.”

Following his death, Northern Territory Police said the Director of Public Prosecutions had accepted an application to have charges against the three accused men upgraded from aggravated assault to murder.

Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Morrissey said the victim’s family remained at the forefront of investigators’ minds.

‘’Our thoughts remain with the family and loved ones of this man as they continue to endure an unimaginable loss,’‘ he said.

‘’This was a vicious attack and the level of violence displayed was reprehensible and has no place in our community.’‘

Two men, aged 26 and 31, are due to appear before Darwin Local Court on Wednesday and a 19-year-old man is due to appear in the same court on August 12.
