In a moment that has brought fresh tears to those who know and love him, the search for missing 14-year-old Taylor Charlton continues with heavy hearts as tomorrow marks what should have been his 15th birthday — a milestone his family once imagined filled with cake, presents, laughter, and the simple joy of watching their boy grow one year older. Instead, they face another painful day of uncertainty, clinging to memories and hope that he will be found safe before the candles can ever be lit.
Taylor was last seen on May 8 at around 10:40pm near Tesco in the Seven Brethren area of Barnstaple. He was reported missing the following day, and since then, the community has united in an extraordinary show of support, searching tirelessly while police maintain that the investigation remains “still very much active.”

A Birthday Shadowed By Absence
For Taylor’s mother Zoe Harvey and the rest of the family, the approaching birthday brings an extra layer of sorrow. What should have been a celebration of life and growth has become a painful reminder of the empty chair at the table, the missing laughter, and the unanswered questions that haunt every waking moment. Friends and volunteers have spoken of how Taylor’s kind, funny nature and love for the gym made him someone who lit up rooms — qualities his family desperately long to see again as they face this milestone without him.
Zoe has been at the forefront of the search efforts, pushing herself physically and emotionally despite the toll it has taken. Her determination, even through moments of collapse and exhaustion, has inspired many, showing the unbreakable strength of a mother’s love. As tomorrow approaches, the family’s pain is shared by a community that has rallied around them, refusing to let Taylor’s birthday pass without renewed hope and action.

Police Update: Investigation Remains Active
Devon and Cornwall Police have confirmed that detectives continue to work rigorously to establish the circumstances surrounding Taylor’s disappearance. Sector Inspector Andy Wills said the search of the River Taw and its estuary has been “rigorous and methodical,” but inquiries are far from over.
“Our commitment to doing everything we can to provide clarity and to find answers for Taylor’s loved ones will not stop,” Inspector Wills stated. “Further searches can and will take place if further information comes to light.”
A pair of shoes believed to belong to Taylor were found on two consecutive days on the high tide line of the riverbank, some 450 metres apart between Sticklepath and Bickington. This discovery has guided much of the focus toward the river, with specialist dive teams prioritising the area. Police are keeping an “open investigative mindset” while working on the theory that Taylor may have entered the water.
The last confirmed sighting, captured on CCTV, shows Taylor heading in the direction of the River Taw after being in the Tesco Extra car park. Multiple agencies, including HM Coastguard, the RNLI, and Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue, have supported the operation with drones and a police helicopter covering the challenging tidal environment.

A Community United By Love And Determination
The response from local residents has been nothing short of inspiring. A Facebook group called “Find Taylor Charlton” has grown rapidly, with members organising daily searches, sharing information, and offering emotional support to the family. Volunteers, including close friends and those who never knew Taylor personally, have gathered at places like The Quay Cafe in Braunton to search areas such as Crow Point. Many wear blue ribbons on their arms as a symbol of hope and solidarity.
Charlie Ridd, 20, a family friend from Ilfracombe, spoke with quiet resolve: “We’ve put out daily posts and organised searches, around 40 of us regularly search the North Devon area. As a community we have pulled together and said that we will not stop looking for Taylor, no matter how long it takes.”
Grace Thurman, 17, who has known Taylor for years, shared her emotions: “I’m close with Taylor, I’ve known him for years. He’s funny, likes going to the gym. He is just a really lovely boy. I’ve been out searching every day for the past week in the hope that he will be found safe.”
Danielle Newton from Barnstaple added: “We’re just hoping that we’ll find something. My daughter and I have been searching daily, sometimes up to two or three times a day. My daughter is a similar age to Taylor so I cannot imagine the pain the family is going through.”
The community’s collective effort reflects the deep bonds within North Devon. Posters and t-shirts featuring Taylor’s image have been distributed widely, keeping his face and story visible as the search continues.
Safety Reminders And A Call For Information
Police have thanked the public for their support but issued important safety reminders. Inspector Wills urged people to avoid the immediate search area: “We are asking the public to help us with this by avoiding the search area. In particular, any activity on the water could significantly disrupt the search operation and put you and members of the emergency services at risk.”
The force has also reminded volunteers to take care and avoid entering unsafe buildings or going near the water or river banks. “There has been an amazing response from the community and we recognise how much everyone wants to help find Taylor. If you are out looking, please help us by not putting yourself at risk,” a spokesperson said.
They have asked people to avoid sharing speculation on social media, as unconfirmed information can make enquiries more challenging. “Speculation being shared on social media can also make our enquiries more challenging. Please avoid sharing any unconfirmed information online.”
Taylor is described as around 5ft 8ins tall, of muscular build, with dark brown hair and a moustache. When last seen, he was wearing a bright blue fitted top, jeans, and bright blue Nike shoes. Police continue to appeal for anyone with information to come forward immediately, quoting reference number 50260117084.

A Birthday Without Answers
As tomorrow dawns — the day Taylor should have turned 15 — the family’s pain is shared by a town that has embraced him as one of their own. The blue ribbons, the daily searches, and the messages of support are all acts of love for a boy whose smile and kind nature are deeply missed. For Zoe and those closest to Taylor, this birthday will be marked not with celebration but with quiet prayers and renewed hope that he will be found safe before another candle can be lit in his honour.
The story of Taylor Charlton has united North Devon in a way few events have, showing the power of community when one of their young is lost. As the search continues along the river and in surrounding areas, the collective determination remains strong. Catherine O’Sullivan, mother of another long-missing young person, recently offered words of wisdom: “Don’t let this happen again to another family. Leave no stone unturned.”
For Taylor’s loved ones, every day without him is heavy, but the support surrounding them provides strength. As his 15th birthday approaches, the hope is that the next piece of information will bring him home, allowing his family to finally celebrate the boy they love so much.
Anyone with information about Taylor’s whereabouts is asked to contact Devon and Cornwall Police immediately on 999.
