An Australian man has been arrested in Vietnam after allegedly causing tens of thousands of dollars in damage during a violent rampage at a cafe.

The outburst at Ge Cafe in Da Nang was caught on CCTV on Thursday and shows a shirtless man throwing chairs at windows, smashing cafe equipment and breaking laptops that were left on tables.

The footage also shows the man appearing to put one customer in a headlock, while grabbing and pushing another.

After the rampage, police were seen leading the man out of the cafe wearing nothing but shorts, with the damage totalling over $20,000 AUD, a Hai Chau ward official estimated.

Posting an update on Facebook, Ge Cafe said that the “serious incident” had started after the man sat down at a table and was asked to order at the counter.

Another customer offered his phone to assist in translation, however, the man allegedly failed to hand the phone back and instead began to scroll through the customers phone reading messages.

“The staff called security for help,” the cafe managers said.

“But the employee had not yet run to call the security, (when the man) stood up and started to take off his shirt, slamming the customer’s phone (on the table).

“He then proceeded to smash (everything), including a lot of bar equipment, shop decor items, tempered glass doors and guests’ belongings in the shop such as laptops and phones.”

Cafe management said this occurred on the first floor, with other guests stuck on the second and third floor.

“After about five minutes, the police arrived in front of the store, the man tried to find a way out and run to the second floor,” they said.

CCTV shows police grappling with the man in an outdoor patio as two male customers attempt to flee indoors.

Police eventually restrained the man and took him out “screaming in opposition”.

The cafes management revealed that they had been offered donations and support from the local and foreign community, but had declined the offers.

The cafe will be closed for several days while clean up and repairs are made and the man is understood to still be in police detention while investigations continue.
