🚨 Murder Suspect Found Dead in Jail Hours After Court Appearance – Authorities Suspect Brutal Assault
On June 13, 2026, 32-year-old Melvin Edwards was shot and killed inside an apartment at the Pine Ridge Gardens Apartments in Mississippi. Responding officers found Edwards suffering from gunshot wounds inside the unit and pronounced him dead at the scene. His death launched a homicide investigation by local law enforcement.
In the days following the shooting, investigators identified 22-year-old Cameron Mitchell and charged him with accessory after the fact, alleging he had some involvement in the case after the killing. Authorities continued working the investigation, which eventually led to a second arrest.
On July 1, 2026, U.S. Marshals and Jackson Police arrested 22-year-old Mielun Butler in connection with Edwards’ death. Butler was charged with murder and brought before a Hinds County judge, who set his bond at $1 million during a court appearance. He was then booked into the Raymond Detention Center in Mississippi to await further legal proceedings.
This morning after his court appearance, Butler was found unresponsive inside his jail cell at the detention center. He was transported to Merit Health hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones said the circumstances suggest Butler was the victim of an assault while in custody. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation has since taken over the case to determine what happened inside the facility and whether anyone else is responsible.
