Netflix viewers in tears after discovering future of ‘extraordinary’ period drama

Netflix viewers have been left fuming after discovering that 1899 was cancelled and are now begging for a second season

Netflix subscribers are up in arms after the platform pulled the plug on 1899 without a second season, with some even threatening to end their subscriptions in protest.

The gripping sci-fi mystery captivated audiences when it premiered in 2022 and left fans hanging with a sizable cliffhanger at the end of its eight episodes.

Spanning both the past and future, 1899 told the story of European immigrants leaving Southampton to forge new beginnings in New York City, each harbouring personal mysteries and backgrounds.

Fronted by Emily Beecham, Aneurin Barnard, and Andreas Pietschmann, and created by the masterminds behind Dark, Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar, the series unfolded in multiple languages as the characters unravelled an enigmatic puzzle upon discovering another vessel adrift at sea.

The abrupt cancellation has left fans reeling, with one viewer expressing deep admiration: “1899 on Netflix is an extraordinary series that transports viewers back in time to the turn of the 20th century with meticulous attention to detail and stunning cinematography. From the moment you press play, you’re whisked away on a journey through the complexities of European migration, societal tensions, and the human condition.”

A viewer raved, “This is literally THE BEST TV SHOW I HAVE SEEN IN YEARS!!!! If you are debating on watching this or not, trust me if u watch it you will love it too and you won’t regret it!”

In the wake of the cancellation, supporters rallied behind a Change.org campaign, which has now surpassed the 100,000 signature mark in a bid to resurrect the series.

The petition pleas, “1899 was clearly created with multiple seasons in mind. After the first season, there are a lot of unanswered questions and a big cliffhanger at the end of the last episode. We want a renewal of the show and a proper end to the story.”
