SHOCK RETIREMENT DECISION JUST BEFORE THE 2026 AFL FINALS: The Reason Behind the Fremantle Star’s Decision to Turn Down a Two-Year Contract Extension After Nine Seasons
AFL premiership favourites Fremantle have been rocked by the shock retirement of Sam Switkowski on the eve of the 2026 finals, with the forward hanging up the boots after nine seasons with the club.
Approaching his 30th birthday in November, Switkowski turned down a two-year contract extension from the Dockers, instead choosing to walk away and prioritise his family life while still in the prime of his career.

Switkowski will play in the upcoming finals campaign for the heavy favourites, determined to help deliver a maiden premiership to Fremantle before officially calling time on his playing career.
“I’ve only ever wanted to play for Fremantle and I’ve felt that way for a long time. I’m really proud of the small contribution I’ve made,” Switkowski said in a statement on Wednesday afternoon.
“I don’t have the desire to continue my playing career anywhere else so I’ll be moving on to something different, I’m not sure what yet.
“I’m really at peace with the decision and content and excited for finals footy, to really just enjoy every moment and see what we can do.
“I’ve been weighing up when might be the right time to head back home and reconnect with family and friends because it’s something that’s always been really important to me – even more so now – starting a new family of my own.
“I’ve hit that point now that I have good clarity on who I am as a person and my values, and the things that are really important to me. It just feels like it’s the right time to move onto the next phase of my life.
“Being around family and friends again to set up Sav, myself and my family in the best place to be the best father and husband I can be.”
Since joining the club as a mature-aged recruit in 2018, Switkowski has been a vital player for the Dockers, tallying 127 games.
His value was on display during the 2026 season, playing 23 of 24 games, only missing Fremantle’s round 24 defeat to Carlton.
