A mother has appeared before court accused of murdering her young daughter at a home in Queensland.

Police were called to the home in Lowood, west of Brisbane, where a four-year-old girl was found unresponsive about 11.10pm on Monday

Despite efforts from paramedics, the young girl was declared dead at the scene.

Police have launched an investigation into whether the child was deliberately drowned, but are awaiting autopsy results.

The child’s mother, a 31-year-old nurse, was arrested and charged with one count of murder domestic violence against a child on Tuesday.

She did not apply for bail during her first appearance in Ipswich Magistrates Court later that day.

The matter was adjourned until next month and she was remanded in custody.

7NEWS understands the state’s Child Safety Department had previously received reports about the nurse.

Detective Inspector Michael Manago said his thoughts are with the community.

“This is an incredibly tragic situation,” he said. “We understand this incident has shocked the local community.”

Manago added that a post mortem examination will “establish greater clarity around how the child died”.

Forensic investigators have been seen at the home since Monday night as investigations into the alleged incident remain ongoing.

Police are urging anyone who may have relevant information to come forward.
