Few actors can match Michael Caine’s longevity and success. The two-time Oscar winner enjoyed a career that spanned more than 70 years, appearing in some of cinema’s most memorable films.
One standout title in his extensive catalogue is Children of Men, the acclaimed 2006 dystopian thriller that has earned widespread praise from critics, with many describing it as a modern masterpiece.
Directed and co-written by Alfonso Cuarón, the film is adapted from P.D. James’s 1992 novel. Set in a bleak vision of Britain in 2027, the story imagines a world facing collapse after nearly two decades without a single birth, leaving humanity confronting the very real prospect of extinction.
The plot centres on Theo Faron, a jaded ex-activist turned bureaucrat, haunted by profound personal tragedy. His world shifts irrevocably upon meeting Kee, a refugee who emerges as the first woman confirmed pregnant in eighteen years, reports the Express.

Another remarked: “An original take at the apocalyptic theme, it taught me how symbolism and hidden references distributed throughout a film can tell a deeper, more meaningful narrative.”
While a third observed: “A sophisticated gem, with an intelligent original script. This was the best picture in 2006, but strangely, it got overlook during the award season. It didn’t even get a nomination.”
Children of Men can be watched on BBC iPlayer.
