In a powerful escalation of efforts to find missing 14-year-old Taylor Charlton, a police helicopter has been deployed as part of a “major search operation” along the River Taw in Barnstaple, Devon, as detectives and volunteers continue their tireless work on what has now become the 10th day since the teenager vanished.
The aerial support, alongside ground teams from Devon and Cornwall Police, fire crews, the RNLI, and HM Coastguard, underscores the scale and urgency of the operation. Taylor was last seen at around 10:40pm on Friday, May 8, near Tesco in the Seven Brethren area. He was reported missing the following day, triggering an immediate and extensive response that has since grown into a coordinated effort involving multiple agencies and hundreds of local residents determined to bring him home safely.

The Helicopter’s Critical Role In The Search
The police helicopter has been actively scanning the river and surrounding areas, providing a vital bird’s-eye view that helps cover the challenging terrain more effectively. The River Taw, with its strong tidal currents and difficult access points, presents a complex environment for search teams. The helicopter’s presence allows officers to spot potential clues that might be missed from the ground, while also ensuring the safety of those working near the water.
Sector Inspector Andy Wills confirmed that the investigation remains “very much active,” with the discovery of a pair of shoes believed to belong to Taylor adding a significant focus to the river search. The shoes were found on two consecutive days on the high tide line of the riverbank, approximately 480 metres apart between Sticklepath and Bickington. This find has guided much of the current operation, with specialist dive teams prioritising the area under the working theory that Taylor may have entered the water.
Inspector Wills said: “We fully understand how difficult and upsetting this continues to be for Taylor’s family, friends and the wider community. The River Taw and its estuary present an extremely challenging environment to search, particularly given tidal conditions. Over the past week, a rigorous and methodical search of the area has been conducted.”

A Community Coming Together With Heart
The response from the people of Barnstaple and North Devon has been nothing short of inspiring. A Facebook group called “Find Taylor Charlton” has grown rapidly, with members organising daily searches, sharing verified information, and offering emotional support to the family. Volunteers, including close friends and those who never knew Taylor personally, have gathered at locations like The Quay Cafe in Braunton to search areas such as Crow Point. Many wear blue ribbons on their arms as a symbol of hope and solidarity.
Charlie Ridd, 20, a family friend from Ilfracombe, spoke with quiet determination: “We’ve put out daily posts and organised searches, around 40 of us regularly search the North Devon area. As a community we have pulled together and said that we will not stop looking for Taylor, no matter how long it takes.”
Grace Thurman, 17, who has known Taylor for years, shared her emotions: “I’m close with Taylor, I’ve known him for years. He’s funny, likes going to the gym. He is just a really lovely boy. I’ve been out searching every day for the past week in the hope that he will be found safe.”
Danielle Newton from Barnstaple added: “We’re just hoping that we’ll find something. My daughter and I have been searching daily, sometimes up to two or three times a day. My daughter is a similar age to Taylor so I cannot imagine the pain the family is going through.”
Taylor’s mother, Zoe Harvey, has been at the forefront of the efforts, pushing herself despite the emotional and physical strain. Her determination has inspired many, showing the unbreakable strength of a mother’s love during an unimaginably difficult time.

Police Appeal For Safe And Focused Help
While grateful for the public’s tremendous support, police have issued important safety reminders. “We recognise how much the community wants to help to find Taylor but would just remind everyone that if you are out looking, please take care and avoid putting yourself at risk. This includes entering unsafe buildings or going near the water or river banks,” a spokesperson said.
They have also urged people to avoid sharing speculation on social media, as unconfirmed information can make enquiries more challenging. “Speculation being shared on social media can also make our enquiries more challenging. Please avoid sharing any unconfirmed information online.”
Taylor is described as around 5ft 8ins tall, of muscular build, with dark brown hair and a moustache. When last seen, he was wearing a bright blue fitted top, jeans, and bright blue Nike shoes. Police continue to appeal for anyone with information to come forward immediately, quoting reference number 50260117084.
A Town United By Hope As The Search Continues
As the search enters its 10th day, the community’s collective vow to keep looking remains strong. The helicopter’s presence overhead serves as both a practical tool and a visible symbol of the determination to find Taylor. For his family and friends, every new day brings fresh pain, but the overwhelming support from neighbours, volunteers, and even strangers provides strength to carry on.
The River Taw, with its powerful tides and hidden dangers, continues to be the main focus. Specialist teams are working methodically to cover every possible area, balancing thoroughness with the safety of all involved. The discovery of the shoes has deepened concerns but also strengthened resolve, reminding everyone of the urgency to bring Taylor home.
Catherine O’Sullivan, mother of another long-missing young person, recently offered words of wisdom that resonate here: “Don’t let this happen again to another family. Leave no stone unturned.” Her message, shared in support of Taylor’s loved ones, highlights the shared pain felt by families in similar situations and the importance of persistence, safety, and unity.
For Zoe Harvey and all those who love Taylor, the approaching days carry extra weight as they hold onto hope that the next development will bring him back safely. The community stands firmly together, refusing to give up. Their message is clear: we will not stop looking until Taylor is home.
Anyone with information about Taylor’s whereabouts is asked to contact Devon and Cornwall Police immediately on 999.
