AFTER THE VERDICT, THE BATTLE CONTINUES: Karmelo Anthony Case Takes Unexpected Turn With New Judge Review
A verdict is supposed to bring a case to an end.
And sometimes, it’s just the beginning of a different fight.
More than a month after #KarmeloAnthony was convicted of murdering #AustinMetcalf and sentenced to 35 years in prison, the courtroom is changing again.
A new judge, Judge Sid L. Harle of the 226th District Court, has been assigned to decide whether the trial judge, Judge John Roach, should step aside from the case as Anthony’s new legal team pushes for a new trial.
Judge Harle is known for presiding over high-profile cases, including the prosecution of a police officer charged in connection with the 2022 mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde.
The defense argues Anthony’s constitutional rights were violated during the trial, pointing to courtroom access, evidence disputes, and public comments made by Roach after the verdict.
They contend those issues warrant both a new trial and a different judge to consider that request.
None of that overturns the jury’s verdict. Anthony remains convicted while the post-trial process plays out.
Now, the question isn’t whether a jury found him guilty.
It’s whether the legal process that led to that verdict will withstand the next round of scrutiny.
