Chilling twist jury wasn’t allowed to hear

Darryl Young has been found guilty of murdering his three neighbours in a shooting at the front gate of his Bogie property.

The jury also found that Young had attempted to murder Ross Tighe after a majority verdict.
Young has been on trial for murdering Mervyn Schwarz, his wife Maree Schwarz and step son Graham Tighe, as well as attempting to murder Graham’s brother Ross Tighe on August 4, 2022.
After a gruelling four-week trial, the jury retired to deliberate their verdict on Wednesday and returned on Friday after more than 14 hours of deliberations to declare they had found Young guilty of three charges of murder.
Justice Christopher Johnstone gave the jury directions at 5pm that if they could not agree on a verdict for the remaining charge, the verdict of 11 of the 12 jurors could be taken. The jury returned a few minutes later and declared 11 of the jurors found Young guilty of the attempted murder of Ross Tighe.
The family of the victims cheered, cried and clapped in the gallery as the verdicts were read out.
Young stood and did not show any emotion.

Speaking with media outside Townsville courthouse Young’s son Derek Young said, “It is what it is” about the verdict.
“We’ve got to fight the next case,” Mr Young said.

“It’s a shame … but it’s what we’ve got to do.”
When asked if there would be an appeal, Mr Young said it was not up to him.

Mr Young said he “absolutely” maintained his father’s innocence.
The jury found that Young shot the family over a belief they had been stealing his cattle and called them for a meeting at the front gate of his property, Shannonvale, at 8am on August 4, 2022.
They found that Young then pulled a rifle from the backseat of his ute and declared “I’ll end this once and for all” before shooting Mervyn in the head.
Young then shot and killed Graham and Maree, whose bodies were all found by police at the gate later that day.
After the murder, Young spent the rest of the day with wind farm workers who had been conducting some testing on his property, and posed for a selfie with them while giving the camera a thumbs up.

Prosecution also alleged that Young tried to kill Ross by shooting him in the stomach.
Ross told the jury in his evidence that he ran and hid in long grass before returning to where his family had been murdered and escaping the scene in a car they had driven to the meeting.
Young will be sentenced on Monday at 2pm.
