The family of a 6-year-old girl who died in a devastating badminton accident launched legal action against the manufacturer of the racket that pierced her skull, calling the tragedy “a parent’s worst nightmare.”
Lucy Morgan, from New Jersey, sustained a catastrophic brain injury in a horrific accident while on a family vacation at a lakeside retreat in Limerick, Maine, on June 1, 2024. The child was playing badminton with her 10-year-old brother when the racket abruptly shattered, propelling the sharp aluminum shaft through her skull and inflicting severe brain trauma that left her “unconscious” and “unresponsive.”
She was immediately airlifted to Maine Medical Center in Portland, where medical teams carried out emergency surgery to extract a section of her skull and alleviate brain swelling. The child then suffered cardiac arrest during the operation.
Hospital personnel managed to revive her, but warned the family that her chances of survival were minimal. In the early hours of Wednesday, June 5, 2024, Lucy succumbed to her injuries.
Her parents, Bethany and Jesse Morgan, initiated a lawsuit on Monday against Franklin Sports, the Massachusetts-based manufacturer of the racket, according to WCVB. The lawsuit contends that the racket, part of a badminton set supplied by the rental cottage where the family was staying, was defective and lacked sufficient adhesive securing the metal stem, allowing the piece to become a dangerous projectile, reports the Mirror US.

The suit further charges Franklin Sports with neglecting to caution consumers regarding the product’s hazards.
The family’s legal representative, Charles P. Hehmeyer of Berman and Simmons in Maine, characterized Lucy’s death as “a parent’s worst nightmare.”

“We are committed to obtaining justice for Lucy by holding Franklin Sports accountable. We want to ensure these rackets are manufactured in a way where this type of tragedy never occurs again,” he stated.
Hehmeyer revealed that a child in New York previously lost an eye due to a Franklin badminton racket, accusing the company of choosing “not to correct this with something as simple as a pin in the handle, which would cost pennies.”

The lawsuit pursues damages encompassing funeral costs, pecuniary loss, emotional distress, loss of comfort, society and companionship, along with additional applicable damages. The Morgan family, comprising Lucy, her parents, and her three siblings, were enjoying the final day of their week-long vacation in Limerick when the tragic incident took place.
The children ventured outside for a game of badminton following lunch when Lucy’s father, a pastor at Green Pond Bible Chapel in Rockaway, was suddenly alerted by the sound of screaming.
“Due to a freak accident with a racquet that broke on a downward swing, a sharp piece had entered Lucy’s skull while she was sitting on the sideline and caused catastrophic injury,” he wrote in a blog post following her passing.
