Royal fans were delighted after a new portrait of the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh was released ahead of their major trip to Europe next month. Prince Edward and Duchess Sophie will be heading to Portugal for three days on June 1, Buckingham Palace announced.

The couple will mark the 640th anniversary of the Treaty of Windsor and celebrate the bilateral relationship between the two countries. It will be the first royal visit to Portugal since 2011, when the King and Queen last visited.

Along with the announcement of their trip to Portugal, both by the Palace and the British Embassy in Lisbon, a new photograph of the couple was shared.

In the picture, Edward and Sophie beam as they pose for the camera, with the Duchess wearing a buttercup-yellow dress and her husband in a navy suit.

The new snap was taken by a photographer, Millie Pilkington, who has worked with the Royal Family on several occasions.

One user jubilantly said on X: “I simply love this new photo!”

Another one added: “Beautiful. They just grow and mature so well. An absolute asset to the RF. my favourite couple by far.”

A third one chimed: “They’re so adorable together. Even without PDA, you can feel the love & frienship between them!!”

Edward and Sophie will carry out various engagements from Lisbo to Porto, closely aligned to issues that are important to them, including youth opportunity, sports inclusion and women, peace and security.

The programme will include visits to historic sites reflecting UK–Portugal heritage, meetings with students and community organisations, and the highlighting of innovative partnerships.
