Mayor of Kingstown Ends Early as Paramount+ Fallout With Taylor Sheridan Grows
/ Tuesday, January 20, 2026 – 10:09AM

We get insider information on the cancellation of Jeremy Renner’s Mayor of Kingstown, a fan-favorite hit show on Paramount+.
Recently saw Paramount+ announce Mayor of Kingstown will end with a shortened season 5, which left fans scratching their heads why.
Now, a new report from Puck News suggests that Paramount+ may already be pulling back from Taylor Sheridan content—despite the massive success of his shows—as a result of Sheridan leaving Paramount for NBCUniversal.

Mayor of Kingstown Canceled Against Sheridan’s Wishes
Puck reports that Paramount+ executives David Ellison and Cindy Holland canceled Mayor of Kingstown early against Taylor Sheridan’s wishes and also shortened the show’s final season down to eight episodes from the usual ten.
This comes despite the series being a hit for the streamer and season four finishing with a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score.
Sheridan still has nearly three years left before his overall TV deal moves to NBCUniversal, making the decision all the more puzzling given the numbers his shows continue to deliver.
Landman is another hit Sheridan show, but no word on if that will be affected.

No New Sheridan Shows Ordered Since Summer
The report also claims that Cindy Holland has not ordered a single new Sheridan series since taking over last summer.
That’s notable considering Sheridan’s track record at Paramount+, which includes Yellowstone, Tulsa King, Mayor of Kingstown, and multiple spinoffs that helped define the platform’s identity.
Puck adds that Holland has been questioning the rollout strategy for Sheridan’s shows and reshuffling release plans, albeit in consultation with Sheridan and his producing partner, 101 Studios.
Sheridan is slated to stick with Paramount on movie side of things with the Call of Duty film.

Frisco King Air Date Still Unclear
One example cited is the upcoming Samuel L. Jackson-led series originally titled “NOLA King,” now retitled Frisco King. The show is reportedly about to shoot, but Puck questions when it will actually air on Paramount+.
That uncertainty only adds to the sense that the streamer is deprioritizing Sheridan content.

Paramount+ Preparing for a Post-Sheridan Future?
The overall takeaway from Puck is blunt: Paramount+ may soon be home to significantly less Taylor Sheridan content, even before he officially departs for NBCUniversal.
If accurate, the move would mark a dramatic shift for a streamer that was largely built on Sheridan’s brand of gritty, adult-skewing dramas.
For now, Mayor of Kingstown will return for a shortened fifth and final season. But behind the scenes, the Sheridan–Paramount+ relationship appears to be cooling fast.
