The launch of the Diddy (Sean Combs) documentary on Netflix, produced by long-time rival Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, has ignited one of the most intense media and legal battles in Hip-Hop history. With his fortune and reputation at stake, Diddy and his team have fiercely denounced the film as a “shameful hit piece,” while 50 Cent continues to fuel the drama with shocking statements about Diddy’s relationships with the women in his life.
Allegations of Theft and Personal Vendetta
Immediately following the documentary’s release, Diddy’s legal team issued a vigorous statement. They accused Netflix of relying on “stolen footage” that was never authorized for release, severely violating Diddy’s copyright. They claim Diddy had amassed this footage since age 19 to tell his own story, making Netflix’s use of it “fundamentally unfair and illegal.”
Diddy’s side particularly attacked the decision to grant creative control to 50 Cent, describing it as a “deeply personal affront” and “illegal,” stressing that 50 Cent is “a longtime adversary with a personal vendetta” whose sole aim is to slander Diddy. They also contended that the film ripped private footage, including conversations with lawyers, out of context.
Netflix Fights Back: Legally Obtained Material

In response, Netflix and Director Alexander Stapleton dismissed all allegations. They asserted that the project, titled Shawn Combs’s The Reckoning, has no ties to any past discussions with Diddy and that “the footage leading up to his indictment and arrest was legally obtained.”
Director Stapleton revealed they reached out to Diddy’s legal team multiple times for an interview but received no response. Regarding the source of the sensitive backstage footage, a close source disclosed a shocking detail: The footage was ultimately sold to Netflix by a third party who owned the rights after the original cameraman was never paid by Diddy. This implies that Diddy’s own habit of underpaying staff inadvertently led to the exposure of his personal secrets.
50 Cent’s Personal War and The Shocking Statement
While the legal battle rages, 50 Cent has been having a “field day” on social media, mocking Diddy. He also injected drama by referencing (unconfirmed) texts from Jay-Z, thanking him for being excluded from the documentary.
However, the climax of the drama came in a GQ interview, where 50 Cent made highly controversial remarks about the motivations of women around Diddy. When questioned why he didn’t include his own ex-partner, Daphne Joy (referred to as “Jane Doe” in filings), in the film, 50 Cent said:
“The one person that I wish was in the doc that would create clarity for people in a different way is Jane Doe… [So] you could see someone who was willing to do it for money.”
He went on to use derogatory language (“hoes”) to imply that women who are not emotionally tied to the sexual experience may participate in such behaviors for financial gain and a lavish lifestyle, insinuating his ex-partner did so.
Diddy’s attempts to issue a cease and desist order failed. The documentary currently holds the number one spot on Netflix, reinforcing 50 Cent’s power as a TV producer and demonstrating that major studios like Netflix employ formidable legal teams to protect their sensational projects, even against the most powerful figures in the entertainment industry.
