It unfolded on State Road 40, just west of Lake Winona Road near Volusia Speedway Park.

Shocking images showed multiple vehicles wrecked at the roadside, including what appeared to be a tractor-trailer, as emergency vehicles blocked off the area.

Two men and a woman died at the scene after their car collided head-on with an SUV, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Cops say a 2023 Honda HR-V, driven by a 21-year-old man from Port Orange, was travelling east with two passengers.

They were a 23-year-old man from Melbourne and a 22-year-old woman from Gainesville.

Troopers said the vehicle “failed to negotiate a curve” and veered into oncoming traffic, smashing straight into a 2021 Ford Expedition.

All three occupants of the Honda were killed instantly.

The Ford’s driver, a 35-year-old man from Ocala, was traveling with a 39-year-old woman and three children aged 16, 14, and 11.

All five were rushed to Halifax Health Medical Center with serious injuries.

The crash shut down State Road 40 in both directions for hours as emergency crews swarmed the scene.

The stretch of road is a 60mph zone and includes a flashing speed indicator sign.

An investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.

The tragedy comes just days after another fatal crash in the area.

A 29-year-old Palm Coast woman died on Friday after losing control of her red Chevrolet Impala on U.S. 1 south of Sawmill Trace.

Troopers said the car veered off the road, struck a guardrail, and then slammed into a concrete embankment.

Emergency crews pronounced her dead at the scene.

The road was also closed for several hours following that crash.
