The sister of cop killer Dezi Freeman has spoken out about her brother’s devastating actions for the first time.
Freeman’s sister, who has chosen not to be publicly identified, told the Herald Sun that she is “ashamed and angry” at her brother’s actions.
Speaking to the masthead on Thursday, Freeman’s sister said she feels “totally devastated and heartbroken” for the two officers that were killed on her brother’s Porepunkah property on August 26.
Freeman went on the run after he shot dead detective Sen. Const. Neal Thompson and Sen. Const. Vadim de Waart-Hottart while the officers were attempting to execute a search warrant. A third officer, who is yet to be publicly identified, was severely injured in the shooting.
“I am ashamed and angry that my brother was capable of murdering two human beings who were just doing their job,” she said, adding that her parents “would have been horrified if they were still alive to witness the tragic events of the past seven months.”
“We never asked for any of this, just like Neal and Vadim and their families, colleagues and friends,” she said.
“Dez has wreaked havoc and evil to so many and for what?
“None of his violent actions make sense.”
A team of ten police officer’s attended Freeman’s rural Victoria property in August last year to execute a search warrant in relation to historical sex offences. He managed to evade police for months, sparking one of the biggest manhunt’s in Australian history.
Freeman’s seven months on the run finally ended on Monday when he was killed during an armed confrontation with police on a rural NSW property near the small town of Walwa. He had been hiding out in a makeshift shipping container home.
Freeman’s sister said that she was shocked when she heard the news of his death, as she believed her brother had died by suicide.
“I was at work when I saw the news. I was in complete shock and distress,”
“I seriously believed he had taken his own life soon after the shooting that day.”
Freeman’s sister made it clear that she does not hold extremist views and had one clear message for supporters of the cop killer: “He is no hero.”
“I only care about the people impacted by my brother’s hatred.
“Heroes build communities, not destroy them.”
Freeman’s sister added that although Monday’s events may bring closure, it won’t be enough for the victim’s families.
“There may be some closure but that doesn’t bring Neal and Vadim back, and three innocent kids are left without a father,” she added.
