Prince Harry and Meghan Markle appeared to bury the hatchet when they brought their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, to meet King Charles and Queen Camilla at Highgrove House on June 10. It didn’t take long for headlines to hail the reunion as a major victory, with some suggesting the couple had successfully used their children as a ticket back into the royal fold. However, a source argues that the absence of a family photograph underscores that the meeting was always intended to be a private family moment, rather than a public olive branch.

In an article on his Substack, Naughty But Nice, royal columnist Rob Shuter pointed to the absence of an official photo, a public appearance, or a statement of forgiveness, noting how the King had played his cards right. He quoted an insider as having said, “This wasn’t a surrender—it was a grandfather wanting to see his grandchildren. People are confusing compassion with capitulation.” Another source added, “If Buckingham Palace wanted the world to see this as a reconciliation, there would have been a picture. The fact that there wasn’t tells you everything you need to know.”

Against that backdrop, Shuter argued that by not giving in to Harry and Markle’s true intentions, the meeting remained exactly what the Palace wanted it to be: a private family moment between Charles, Harry, and his children, not a public rehabilitation of the Sussex brand. An insider stressed, “The institution didn’t blink. Charles acted as a father and a grandfather, not as the head of the monarchy negotiating terms.” Despite the celebratory headlines, they said Harry and Markle’s positions in the family remain unchanged. “Their royal status is the same. Their relationship with the institution is the same. Their commercial prospects are the same.”

On that note, Shuter previously alleged that Meghan was planning to travel with an entourage intended to capture every detail of the reunion; however, no media outlets caught wind of her landing in the UK with the children. If only Harry and Meghan had snapped a picture of Charles with his grandchildren, it would have made a massive difference. On his Substack, a source claimed, “The Palace knew the value of that photograph. It would have been used for years as proof of reconciliation and royal endorsement. The meeting happened. The picture didn’t.” Safe to say, Charles kept the ace up his sleeve with this one!
