A Blue Peter contributor has opened up about how their time on the show ended in a punch up when their charity race descended into chaos.

They appeared on the popular children’s programme in the 70s after gearing up to take part in a charity fund-raising chair race which was from Houses of Parliament to Mansion House.

The contributor took to Reddit to share their experience on the programme and confessed on the discussion website that ‘this story is the gods honest truth’.

They asked: ‘Does anyone remember seeing a punch-up on Blue Peter in the 70s (it hasd Bunny Girls and sedan-chairs)?’

In this story, Daily Mail has changed the name of the presenter that the Reddit user has claimed was involved.

They claimed that their youth leader ‘waited to the last moment’ to tell them that their race was going to appear on Blue Peter because they only wanted ‘people committed to the race’.

A Reddit user asked: ‘Does anyone remember seeing a punch-up on Blue Peter in the 70s (it hasd Bunny Girls and sedan-chairs)?’

Not only that, they were also going to have a Bunny Girl from the Playboy Club in Mayfair as their passenger, and while at the studio, they were told that one of the Blue Peter presenters was also going to do so.

After three failed attempts, they had to cut and the producers gave each team a specific point to aim for so that they didn’t end up crashing again.

They were also told that it ‘didn’t matter who won’ because they ‘wouldn’t show the winner anyway’.

‘Take#1: 3..2..1.. GO! We all toddle towards the huge studio entrance which lead into a huge tunnel (you could drive a lorry down it)… and we all took the racing-line for the right-hand of the studio entrance and so all 4 teams collided,’ they wrote on Reddit.

However, the fourth take ended in a catastrophe, and many would be shocked at what happened on set of the incredibly PG TV show.

The Reddit user then claimed: ‘Take#4: 3..2..1.. GO! Off we toddle through the allotted points of the entrance without a collision and into the tunnel, which was curved.

‘So of course, we all take the racing line again… this time we collided with Jane Smith’s sedan-chair, but their foot-pads tripped up one of ours, so we broadsided a wall…

‘Our Bunny Girl was distraught, we weren’t having that, honour had to be done for m’lady…’

They then claimed that there was a ‘punch-up’ which ended in which the presenter ‘verbally laid into’ the show’s guests.

When the episode eventually aired on screen, the Reddit user fumed that they ‘DID show the winner of the race’.

They claimed: ‘As regards the punch-up, they glossed over it with a long-shot were you could make out a couple of sedan-chairs and a small group of foot-pads in the tunnel, and the commentary was something like “Oh, it looks like there’s been a bit of collision over there.”‘

Daily Mail have contacted BBC for comment.

Blue Peter was created by John Hunter Blair and the show hit our screens in 1958

It continues to air to this day and over the past 67 years, there has been 44 presenters.

The programme currently airs episodes every Friday on CBBC, and the present hosts include Joel Mawhinney, Abby Cook, Shini Muthukrishnan and Hacket T Dog.

It comes after it was revealed back in August that Blue Peter bosses have taken dramatic steps in recent years to ensure the world’s longest-running children’s TV show doesn’t become obsolete – including introducing its first non-human presenter and axing its live format after more than six decades.

The BBC programme, which has been on air since 1958, has faced plummeting viewing figures as it struggles to compete with YouTube and TikTok.

Once watched by millions, the show now averages just 37,700 viewers, with a notorious re-run in 2017 recording zero viewers, The Times reports.

Now, in an effort to capture the attention of a new generation, producers are revamping almost every aspect of the format.

Having first moved from London‘s Television Centre to Salford in 2011, Blue Peter has relocated again – this time to a smaller city-centre studio in Manchester.

The new set, housed in a Grade II listed building, has been designed to look more like the homes of online influencers than a traditional TV studio.

Gone is the glossy black vinyl floor, and in its place are exposed brick walls, wooden flooring and a colourful geometric rug, aiming for a warm and modern feel.

Joel Mawhinney, 25, who is currently the show’s oldest presenter, said the redesign was an important shift for young viewers. ‘The old set was quite jarring,’ he explained. ‘Now it feels like a loft where we’re all just having fun.’

The most surprising move came with the announcement that Mawhinney and his co-presenters, Abby Cook and Shini Muthukrishnan, will be joined by CBBC favourite Hacker T Dog.

The puppet character will officially become Blue Peter’s 44th presenter next month – and its very first non-human host.

Equally significant has been the decision to scrap the tradition of live broadcasts, a hallmark of the show since its launch.

Episodes are now pre-recorded and edited ‘as live’, with producers insisting the change allows more freedom and flexibility.
