Reiner and wife, Michele, 68, were reportedly found by their daughter with their throats slit after an argument with a family member.
Speaking about the September suspension of late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel by ABC, Reiner railed against what he saw as “authoritarian” overreach in the entertainment industry by Donald Trump’s administration.
Speaking to CNN’s Brianna Keilar about freedom of speech, Reiner warned it could be the last time you see him.
“Control the media, control the message. Make sure that only what we have to say and only what we believe will get out to the public,” Reiner said, referencing the Trump administration.
“That goes and flies 180 degrees against the First Amendment of the Constitution.”
In September, Kimmel was indefinitely suspended from his late-night show, Jimmy Kimmel Live, after making controversial comments over the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
The comments prompted affiliate networks to pull Kimmel’s show from their schedules, leading ABC/Disney to suspend the show to “take the temperature down” amid tense times.
The suspension lasted several days and led to major backlash from industry professionals, including Reiner.
In an impassioned rant about government control of the media, Reiner claimed the country is seeing “1A [play out] in the authoritarian playbook.”
Reiner accused Trump of wanting to “destroy the Constitution” and limit what media professionals are allowed to say on air.

“It can’t happen,” Reiner continued.
“If it does happen…you’re not going to be having this program. You’re not going to be having someone like me on to talk.
“It will be state-run media, and that is the basis for authoritarian rule.”
As the host thanked the director of When Harry Met Sally, he ended the conversation with a message that seemed to foreshadow his fate.
“By the way, this may be the last time you ever see me.”
Tributes to Rob Reiner and his wife Michele
TRIBUTES have been paid to the actor and director Rob Reiner and his wife Michele following their deaths.
“Rob was the big-hearted genius behind so many of the classic stories we love, with projects as wide-ranging as The Princess Bride to A Few Good Men,” California Governor Gavin Newsom wrote on X.
“His boundless empathy made his stories timeless, teaching generations how to see goodness and righteousness in others — and encouraging us to dream bigger.
“Rob will be remembered for his remarkable filmography and for his extraordinary contribution to humanity.”
Former US president Barack Obama spoke warmly about the couple.
“Rob’s achievements in film and television gave us some of our most cherished stories on screen,” he said.
“But beneath all of the stories he produced was a deep belief in the goodness of people—and a lifelong commitment to putting that belief into action.
“Together, he and his wife lived lives defined by purpose. They will be remembered for the values they championed and the countless people they inspired.”
Former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi described Reiner as someone who was creative and funny.
She also hailed him as an actor who could make fans laugh and cry when they watched his films.
Pelosi described Reiner’s wife as an “indispensible partner and intellectual resource.”
Ben Stiller said Reiner was one of his favorite directors.
Josh Gad, who voiced Olaf in Frozen, described Reiner and his wife’s deaths as a “devastating” loss.
HORRIFIC SCENE
Reiner and his wife were found dead inside their Los Angeles mansion on December 14, less than four months after the CNN interview.
The Oscar-nominated director and his wife were found with injuries consistent with stab wounds, according to reports.
The couple, who married in 1989, were reportedly found by their daughter, Romy, who lived across the street from the $13.5 million estate.
On Monday, Los Angeles Police Department Chief Jim McDonnell announced the arrest of Reiner and Michele’s son, Nick, 32.
Nick was booked on murder charges and is being held on $4 million bail.
A source told The U.S. Sun that Reiner, Michele, and their son attended a Hanukkah party on Saturday evening.
Attendees at the event said they witnessed the family get into a heated public argument, the source added.
The clash is believed to have continued overnight at the family’s home in Brentwood, where Reiner and Michele were found dead at around 3:30 pm PST on Sunday.
The source told The U.S. Sun that people who attended the event were “shocked” to hear about the murders, “but once they heard Nick was implicated, no one was surprised.”
Nick reportedly lives in LA, has rarely been seen publicly since he opened up about his struggles with drug addiction in 2016.
He admitted to first going to rehab at the age of 15 and said his addiction issues even left him homeless.

The couple’s deaths were confirmed shortly after police responded to an emergency call made at 3:30 pm on Sunday.
LAPD Deputy Police Chief Alan Hamilton told reporters at the scene that investigations will continue, adding that there was no sign of forced entry into the home.
LAPD Captain Mike Bland later confirmed the force is now investigating an “apparent homicide.”
“We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time,” a family spokesperson said in a statement.
