A new report hints that the Duke of Sussex’s police protection in his home country could be reinstated, paving the way for his children to visit the U.K.

As Prince Harry’s fight to have armed security reinstated during his visits to the United Kingdom may be heading in his favor, it could mean bringing his family back to his home country.
A Jan. 4 report in The Mail on Sunday stated that an official review found that the Duke of Sussex meets the criteria for taxpayer-funded security. Prince Harry, 41, has been campaigning for his police protection to be reinstated after losing it in 2020, after he and his wife, Meghan Markle, stepped back from their royal roles and relocated to California.
Harry previously stated that he currently doesn’t feel safe bringing his wife, 44, and their two children, Prince Archie, 6, and Princess Lilibet, 4, to the U.K. under his current security arrangements. However, having his protection reinstated could pave the way to more return visits with his wife and children.
While Archie was born in the U.K. in 2019, before his parents stepped back as working members of the royal family, Lili was born after their move to California. The siblings only visited their father’s native country once since the Duke and Duchess of Sussex relocated to the United States: in 2022, when Harry and Meghan took part in Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations that June.

Harry and Meghan only attended two events out of the four days of festivities marking his grandmother’s historic 70 years on the throne: watching Trooping the Colour with extended family and stepping out for a service of thanksgiving.
“They aren’t part of the [working] royal family anymore, and that’s a decision they have taken — but maybe [the public] hasn’t quite accepted that yet,” a source who knows the couple told PEOPLE at the time. “Yes, they were low-key. They paid their respects and went home.”
The source added, “They were really here to see the Queen, and they did.”
The June 2022 trip fell during their daughter’s first birthday, and they celebrated the occasion with a backyard picnic at Frogmore Cottage, their former U.K. home. Harry and Meghan also released a birthday portrait of Lilibet, although she and Archie did not make any public appearances.

Meghan was most recently back in her husband’s home country in September 2022. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were visiting the U.K. for a charity event when Queen Elizabeth died at age 96. They extended their stay to attend the funeral and surrounding events.
Prince Harry has returned to the U.K. on numerous occasions in the years since without his wife and children. In addition to attending his father King Charles’ coronation solo in May 2023, he has also attended charity events, court hearings and more. He most recently was in England in September 2025, a visit that included a meeting with the King. That reunion marked the first time that the father and son had seen each other in 19 months amid their strained relationship.
After losing his legal appeal against a government decision that stripped him of automatic police protection when visiting Britain in May, Prince Harry told BBC News that he couldn’t “see a world in which I would be bringing my wife and children back to the U.K. at this point.”
“They’re going to miss, well, everything,” Harry continued. “I love my country. I always have done. Despite what some people in that country have done.”
“I miss the U.K., I miss parts of the U.K., of course I do,” he told the outlet. “I think that it’s really quite sad that I won’t be able to show my children my homeland.”
After the most recent reunion with his father, the Duke of Sussex hinted that he was closer to bringing his family back to the U.K.
Speaking to The Guardian during his trip to Ukraine, the Duke of Sussex was questioned whether he’d like to bring his children to his home country. He replied, “Yes, I would. This week has definitely brought that closer.”
