Sara Cox has shared how Queen Camilla’s true colours emerged during an embarrassing mix-up involving Camilla’s daughter. The BBC Radio 2 presenter is gearing up to delve into the literary world this week as she prepares to front the World Book Day special for BBC Sounds on March 5 and lead BBC 500 Words on The Radio 2 Book Club.

The programme will even include a tour of the Royal Library at Windsor Castle, a location that boasts more than 45,000 rare books and manuscripts, including annotated Shakespeare folios.

Given this, it is hardly surprising that Queen Camilla came up in conversation when Sara was recently interviewed, with suggestions she would likely encounter the monarch during the event.

Camilla, an avid reader who established The Queen’s Reading Room initiative in 2021, is a “laugh”, according to Sara. She made the comment after being asked whether she had met the Queen before.

This prompted Sara to recount an amusing anecdote about Her Majesty, recalling an awkward incident at Clarence House where she mistook her daughter, Laura Lopes, for an author.

Sara told The Observer: “Yes, she’s a laugh. I met her at a celebration for authors that she had at Clarence House.”

“I mistook her daughter, Laura (Lopes), for an author that I half knew, and so I said to Laura, ‘Come over. I’ll introduce you to the duchess. Let’s go over and say hi’.”

“Laura played along, so we went over, and it slowly dawned on me who she was, because Camilla was like ‘Hiiii’ to her own daughter. It came as no surprise at all that Camilla and Jilly Cooper got on really well. I can see them as real kindred spirits.”

The 86-year-old cookery writer and novelist has notably encountered the Royal Family over the years.

She revealed that she would be stepping down from the Channel 4 cooking programme and is set to be succeeded by celebrity cook and Cook, Eat, Repeat star Nigella Lawson.

In her memoir, Prue admitted to “really liking the attention” that comes as a result of being in the limelight and how she is “warmly welcomed as an old friend” by celebrities, including the Queen.

She wrote: “I confess to really liking the attention that comes with a bit of fame. It’s lovely being warmly welcomed as an old friend by the likes of Jonathan Ross or Queen Camilla, even though I know they are probably faking it.”
