A former Extreme Makeover: Home Edition star who was fatally stabbed in his home identified his alleged killer while in the hospital, according to a report.
Eduardo Xol, 58, once a singer and actor before appearing on Extreme Makeover, called 911 to report that he needed help on Sept. 10, 2024.
Police found Xol suffering from multiple stab wounds in his Palm Springs, Calif., apartment, the city’s police department said. He died in the hospital 10 days later.
Richard Gonzales was arrested in connection with the stabbing and was charged with murder following Xol’s death, PEOPLE previously reported.
The Bay Area Reporter reported that Gonzales appeared in court for a hearing on March 17, having previously pleaded not guilty.
According to the paper, police claimed that Xol and Gonzales had been in a casual sexual relationship and that while in the hospital, the TV star identified Gonzales as his attacker after initially declining to do so.
PEOPLE previously reported that police alleged that before being arrested, Gonzales called police to say he’d been assaulted the previous night.
Officers followed up and later allegedly determined Gonzales was at the scene of the stabbing and was “likely the suspect.”
In addition to his on-screen career, Xol was formerly a contributor for PEOPLE En Español, writing a home decor column called “Casa con Eduardo Xol.”
“We are heartbroken at the tragic loss of our beloved Eduardo Xol,” his family said in a statement to PEOPLE following his death. “As his family, we know that his kindness has touched the lives of so many.”
“We ask for that kindness returned now allowing our privacy to be respected as we process our grief,” the statement continued. “In lieu of flowers we ask that donations be made in Eduardo’s name to the Lupus Foundation of America as he spent so much of his life in the service of others.”
