A second infant remains in a critical condition in hospital.

A newborn has been found dead in a tent with another baby rushed to hospital.

Emergency services were called to Cadell Pl in Wagga Wagga, in the NSW Riverina region, to visit a tent site just after 4.20pm on Saturday following a concern for welfare report.

Cadell Pl backs onto the Murrumbidgee River, where 7NEWS.com.au understands the tent was sent up in the parkland bush.

Officers from the Riverina Police District arrived to find a 37‑year‑old woman, the body of a newborn infant, and a second infant at the tent.

NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the woman and the surviving baby before both were taken to Wagga Wagga Base Hospital, where the baby remains in a critical condition.

A crime scene has been established as detectives work to determine what happened.

The investigation remains ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact police.
