Kate Middleton proved to be a popular figure at Wimbledon on Thursday after her humble act left a BBC commentator speechless during a live TV broadcast. The Princess of Wales is a patron of the All England Lawn and Tennis Club (AELTC) and regularly visits Wimbledon on an annual basis. She was the only royal to make her way to SW19 for Thursday’s action, joining tennis icon Tim Henman to watch Arthur Fery on Court 18. But it was her surprising decision to mix it with the fans that left everyone aghast.
Fresh from completing the Three Peaks Challenge at the weekend to raise money for the Royal Marsden Hospital, the 44-year-old spoke to tennis fans who had spent hours waiting in the queue. The famous line is often filled with thousands of supporters hoping to purchase a ticket on the day. Kate went beyond merely speaking to them, however, as she was later spotted scanning some of the tickets of those entering.
BBC commentator Chris Bradnam was left staggered that fans got the chance to meet Princess Kate as they got their tickets scanned at SW19.
“Her Royal Highness, Catherine Princess of Wales, she’s been on duty today, mixing it with the fans, and scanning tickets!” Bradnam said on air. “Our floor manager Tim told me that – who’d have thought, they’d have been meeting her scanning her ticket, coming into the grounds today, and now [sat] in the middle of fans.”
His co-commentator and former British tennis player Kyle Edmund appeared to be equally astonished, responding: “Is that right!”

She was later spotted on Court 18, where she sat alongside former British No. 1 Henman and the All England Club chair Deborah Jevans to watch Britain’s Fery in his second round match against Finland’s Otto Virtanen. Kate slipped into the court largely unnoticed during a break in the fifth game of the first set as Fery led 3-2 with serve but trailed 1-0 in sets.
After watching some of the match, Kate left alongside Henman before entering the tournament’s media centre. She was then chaperoned upstairs to the players’ and hospitality area. There, she met with children from the local Shine Camera Club, which supports children from disadvantaged backgrounds to develop confidence, creativity and self-expression through photography.
Later in the afternoon, she popped up again on the cameras at No. 1 Court watching Katie Swan against No.26 seed Madison Keys, this time with Andy Murray and Anne Keothavong in tow.

BBC’s Wimbledon presenter Isa Guha also shed some light on Kate’s schedule on day four, revealing she will give an interview with ex-women’s tennis player Keothavong later on Thursday.
“The Princess of Wales has been watching on on Court 18 with Tim Henman. She came in a little bit earlier. She surprised some fans. That was a lovely moment for them to be able to meet her,” she said.
“She spoke to some spectators over at the Hill. She’s always a favourite here at the Championships. I believe she’s going to be chatting to Anne Keothavong a little bit later as well. Great moments, great scenes here on day four.”
