A Swiss tourist killed by a three-metre bull shark on the NSW Mid North Coast and her boyfriend, who is lucky to be alive after the terrifying attack, have been named.

Livia Mulheim, 25, died and Lukas Schindler, 26, was seriously injured after being mauled by a shark during a swim at Crowdy Bay about 6.30am on Thursday.

Although Mr Schindler managed to drag his dying girlfriend back to shore with him, she could not be saved.

The Swiss couple had spent the past several months travelling around Australia, visiting beaches and coastal towns in NSW and WA.

Days earlier, the couple were in Noosa, posting on social media about the “incredibly memorable” bed and breakfast they stayed in together after spending a few days camping.

Mr Schindler was in Australia on an “exchange semester” from Switzerland.

He also ran the Syney Marathon, posing at the finish line with his medal.

Ms Mulheim was understood to have visited Australia several times

A witness saw the couple and called triple-0, and she was guided by paramedics to apply a tourniquet to Mr Schindler’s thigh, potentially saving his life.

Despite best efforts from paramedics, Ms Mulehim was declared dead at the scene.

Mr Schindler was flown in a Westpac rescue helicopter to John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition.

He is now in a stable condition, a hospital spokesperson confirmed.

The tourists, visiting from Switzerland, were filming dolphins with a GoPro while they were swimming at the beach, possibly inadvertently recording the horror shark attack at the same time.

Police will now review the footage to determine which shark was responsible for the mauling.

Experts believe it was a mature bull shark.

Kylies Beach is a secluded spot in Crowdy Bay near a popular camping spot, which is not patrolled by lifeguards.

The tourists arrived at the campsite Wednesday and were believed to be travelling in a vehicle hired from Queensland.

Beaches have since been closed until further notice.

Calls for lifesaving shark kits

In the wake of the tragedy, a group of surfers and shark attack survivors are calling for support to roll out lifesaving emergency response kits on beaches across Australia.

A year after creating Community Shark Bite Kits to help victims of shark attacks in the Port Macquarie-Hastings area, founder Danny Schouten has deployed more than 150 emergency kits on beaches across NSW, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia.

Shark attack survivors Toby Begg and Kai McKenzie have thrown their support behind the project.

Each kit is designed to help control life-threatening bleeding in the case of a dangerous encounter with a shark.

Medical equipment specialists TacMed supplies the kit contents, which include a tourniquet, two conforming bandages, two large dressings, an emergency thermal blanket, gloves, a whistle, and step-by-step instructions on how to treat a shark bite.

“When a shark attack happens, every second counts,” Mr Schouten said.

“A shark bite kit provides tools that can help control bleeding and hopefully increase someone’s chance of survival. With the support of communities and donors, we can get shark bite kits on every beach around the country.

“It’s about Australian beaches being well prepared for when these attacks happen and making our coastline a safer place for everyone. We’re not going to stop doing what we love, so we just have to be better prepared.”

Mr Begg said: “Shark bite kits are important because they have the potential to be lifesaving, specifically to stop massive bleeding until emergency help arrives.

“I know from my own experience that the application of a tourniquet and having the means to manage a traumatic situation could make all the difference when seconds count. Having one nearby can turn a tragic accident into a survivable event.”

Mr McKenzie, said: “The shark bite kits are a great idea that could really save someone’s life. I was lucky to have someone with such experience to save me, but there will come a day where that won’t be the case and a shark bite kit would help the chances of surviving dramatically.”

Witness likely saved tourist’s life

NSW Ambulance Superintendent Josh Smyth described the incident as “tragic”.

He thanked the witnesses who jumped in to render first aid to the couple.

“I need to (give) a shout out to the bystander on the beach who put a makeshift tourniquet on the male’s leg (which) potentially saved his life and allowed NSW Ambulance paramedics to get to him and render the first aid,” he told reporters.

“The courage from some bystanders is amazing in the situation and … to put yourself out there is very heroic.

“The community … rely on those things.”

Speaking to NewsWire, a MidCoast Council spokesperson said the council was working alongside National Parks and Wildlife staff and Emergency Services during the investigation.

“MidCoast Council’s Mayor Claire Pontin has expressed her sadness at the loss of life and extended her condolences to the families involved,” they said.

Consulate General of Switzerland in Sydney told news.com.au: “We can confirm that two Swiss nationals were involved in a shark attack in Australia. One Swiss national lost her life, and another Swiss national was injured.

“We are in contact with the local authorities and are supporting the relatives within the framework of consular protection.”
