“She was so sweet,” said first-time Olympic medalist Megan Oldham

An athlete competing for Canada at the 2026 Winter Olympics says it was a treat to meet Princess Anne.

Freestyle skier Meghan Oldham, 24, scored bronze as her first Olympic medal in the Women’s Slopestyle Final at the Milano Cortina Winter Games on Monday, Feb. 9, where Princess Anne, 75, presented the prize.

“She was so sweet. She was just saying congratulations, like, this is such a big accomplishment, and then she was also just asking me about some other events that I have coming up,” Oldham told CBC Olympics journalist Ariel Halwani.

“She was like, ‘Are you competing again?’ I was like, ‘Yeah, I’m competing in Big Air.’ So she just wished luck, which was really nice,” Oldham added.

“A little chit chat with the Princess,” Halwani commented.

Canada is a Commonwealth realm, where King Charles is head of state, and Princess Anne seems to have an affinity for the country. The Princess Royal holds ceremonial roles with several regiments of the Canadian Armed Forces and gave a rare interview to Canadian outlet CBC before her brother’s coronation in 2023.

Anne presented more Olympic medals on Monday, doing the honors at the medal ceremony for Women’s Snowboard Big Air. King Charles’ sister is a longtime member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and has a special connection to the Games as a former Olympian herself.

Princess Anne became the first member of the British royal family to compete in the Olympics when she saddled up to compete for Great Britain’s equestrian team at the 1976 Summer Games. She has stayed connected to the international competition through her IOC role and even presented her equestrian daughter, Zara Tindall, with her silver medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

The Princess Royal arrived in Milan on Feb. 2 for an IOC Session before the Milan Cortina Games began, where she shared a laugh with Prince Albert of Monaco, a fellow former Olympian. She also squeezed another sports event into her schedule when she attended the Guinness Six Nations 2026 match between Italy and Scotland in Rome on Feb. 7.

The rugby match isn’t affiliated with the Olympics, but Princess Anne went to support the Scottish squad as patron of the Scottish Rugby Union. There, the hardworking royal had a totally humble reaction when the crowd went wild when she appeared on the Jumbotron.
