Six months ago, Australian comedy legend Magda Szubanski revealed her shocking diagnosis of stage 4 mantle cell lymphoma, a rare and aggressive form of blood cancer.

Now, her close friends — Today Extra co-host David Campbell and his wife Lisa — have shared an update on how the 64-year-old Kath & Kim star is coping amid her health battle.

In a new podcast interview, the couple said Szubanski has deeply felt the love from fans across the country and has been managing to stay upbeat, keeping her trademark sense of humor through this challenging time.

“She’s talked about how the outpouring of emotion and support has been instrumental in helping her get through everything,” Lisa said during their appearance on Stellar’s Something To Talk About podcast.

“I can’t speak to her personal health, but she’s an incredible human being, and we’re so fortunate to have her in our lives.”

Campbell added that the comedy icon — best known for her role as Sharon Strzelecki in Kath & Kim — still “laughs at everything.”

“She laughs at us. She laughs at herself. And she even made us laugh at the cancer with her,” he said.
“People say laughter is the best medicine — and it’s true. It really does help.”

Back in May, Szubanski revealed her diagnosis in an emotional video shared with fans, receiving a wave of national support.

She wrote in her Instagram post:

“Lovelies. Well. Some not-great news. I’ve been diagnosed with stage 4 mantle cell lymphoma — a rare and fast-moving blood cancer.

It’s serious, but I’ve started one of the best treatments available (the Nordic protocol), and I’m lucky to be receiving world-class care here in Melbourne.

I won’t sugarcoat it: it’s rough. But I’m hopeful. I’m being lovingly cared for by friends and family, my medical team is brilliant, and I’ve never felt more held by the people around me.”

Just four months ago, the beloved Aussie star was inducted into the Logies Hall of Fame.

During her emotional acceptance speech, she said:

“The love and support I’ve felt — like a tsunami — from the Australian public has been overwhelming.”

Szubanski is widely known for her iconic comedic work, including Kath & Kim and the films Babe and Babe: Pig in the City.
