King Charles is set to offer Royal Lodge – Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s former home – to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, it is reported.

The monarch is understood to want to bury the hatchet with Harry, 41, following the rift believed to have developed since he and Meghan Markle left the Royal Family for a new life in California in 2020. Royal Lodge is currently vacant after Charles evicted his brother, Andrew, late last year and sources understand the King sees it as an opportunity for his son and daughter-in-law.

One insider said: “This would be the ultimate olive branch. Charles wants unity. Offering Harry a significant Windsor property would send a powerful message that the door is still open.”

But it is thought this would likely displease Andrew, the former Duke of York, who had lived at Royal Lodge for 20 years. The father of two has reportedly struggled with the move to his temporary home, Wood Farm, which he allegedly described as “beneath him”.

In his article on Substack, royal columnist Rob Shuter says he has spoken to various insiders who believe Charles, 77, is ready to let bygones be bygones and let go out of the past with Harry. The sources have described Royal Lodge, which is in Windsor Great Park, as “expensive to maintain, in need of serious repairs, and weighed down by years of controversy.”

It had been Andrew and Sarah Ferguson’s home since 2004 but the fallout following the Epstein files has led to Andrew’s move to Wood Farm, and Sarah’s relocation elsewhere. Photographs published by the Daily Mirror last year, though, showed the huge extent of the repairs needed at the 30-bedroom property.

And questions remain whether Harry and 44-year-old Meghan intend to return to royal duties. It appeared last year, though, the couple had considered switching the US for the UK, particularly when their passport applications for Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet included the titles HRH (His /Her Royal Highness) as well as the surname Sussex. This was reportedly because Harry and Meghan want their kids to decide for themselves whether they want to become working royals, or stay out of public life when they get older.

Yet, in the Substack published this week, one source admitted: “The optics are tricky. Moving Harry and Meghan into Andrew’s old house ties them to a property that’s become synonymous with scandal.”

Last month, a report suggested the King had offered the Sussexes accommodation at Highgrove House during the 2027 Invictus Games, which will be held in Birmingham. The city won through its strong commitment to the welfare and recovery of serving personnel and veterans.
