The Sovereign Grant, which is one of King Charles’ primary funding streams, grew by $60 million in the 2025-2026 year.

As head of the British monarchy, King Charles is one of the wealthiest people in all of Britain.

He is worth an estimated $860 million, according to The Sunday Times 2025 Rich List — but how did he come to be worth so much without a traditional salary? Working members of the royal family do not receive a typical paycheck, but their work and private lives are funded from various sources.

When he was the Prince of Wales, Charles was funded through the Duchy of Cornwall, an estate responsible for providing funds to the heir to the throne. Since he became King in September 2022, Charles now receives his funding from three distinct sources: the Crown Estate, the Duchy of Lancaster and his own private investments.

Charles receives the largest sum of money from the Crown Estate, which is a portfolio of various assets including retail and hospitality businesses, high-end properties in London and more than 191,000 acres of land and estates, per ABC News.

The profits earned from the Crown Estate are controlled by the U.K. Treasury, and a percentage of those profits are given to the royal family in a lump sum known as the Sovereign Grant. The percentage itself has fluctuated over the years: it rose from 15% to 25% in the 2017-2018 year (to help pay for repairs at Buckingham Palace), but dropped back down to 12% in the 2024-2025 year (in anticipation of increased profits), according to the BBC.

In the 2025-2026 year, Charles received more than $176.6 million from the Sovereign Grant — an increase of more than $61 million. The significant jump in profits came from the sale of offshore wind farm leases that are owned by the Crown Estate, “as well as the active management of our diverse and resilient portfolio,” according to Dan Labbad, the chief executive officer of the Crown Estate.

The almost $177 million from the Sovereign Grant is responsible for covering the official duties of the royal family, including maintaining official residences, paying staff and providing funding for official engagements and trips. In 2025, there were 2,458 engagements attended by members of the royal family.

Charles is also funded through the Duchy of Lancaster, a private estate held in trust established by King Henry IV in 1399 to provide an inheritance for the King and his successors. The Duchy currently consists of historic properties and monuments, urban properties (including the Savoy Estate), a mineral portfolio and more than 41,000 acres of rural land.

All of the Duchy of Lancaster’s net revenue goes to the Privy Purse — which is paid to Charles as his private funding.

In the 2024-2025 year, the Privy Purse totaled more than $38 million — but not all of that money goes directly to Charles. While it does cover his private expenses, it also pays for the upkeep of private royal residences such as Sandringham and Balmoral, as well as the expenses of other working royals, according to The Guardian.

Charles’ third funding stream comes from his personal portfolio, which includes his private investments, savings and properties. This figure, however, is not publicly reported.

These three sources — the Sovereign Grant, the Privy Purse and Charles’ personal portfolio — all fund the King’s work and life as the head of the British royal family. Following a slight slowdown in his work pace in 2024 (due to his cancer diagnosis in February of that year), Charles topped the list as the “hardest-working” royal in 2025.

According to the Court Circular, he carried out 535 royal engagements in 2025 — more than doubling his workload from the year prior, despite continuing to receive treatment for his cancer.

As for 2026, Charles is expected to increase his travel schedule, after announcing in December 2025 that his treatment schedule had been “reduced.” He reportedly has more than 15,000 miles of foreign travel planned for 2026, according to The Sun, which includes a “highly likely” visit to the U.S. in April.
