Queen Camilla spent the last day of her United States trip at an event close to her heart.

On Thursday, April 30, the Queen — who has had a lifelong passion for horses — visited a farm in Middleburg, Virginia, to highlight the work of America’s horse racing industry.

Queen Camilla, 78, stepped out solo to tour Smitten Farm in The Plains, where she learned more about the sport in America, industry-wide efforts to improve the health and welfare of resources and opportunities for partnership in horse racing between the U.S. and U.K.

Upon arrival, the Queen accepted a bouquet of flowers from the farm manager Hunter Marek’s daughter, Violet Marek.

At the farm, she spoke to breeders about their work and veterinary research endeavoring to improve the health and welfare of racehorses.

The royal also got to see some breeding mares and foals up close, gently petting some horses and feeding one a carrot.

King Charles’ wife elsewhere met reps from the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority. The group works to improve the safety of horse racing for horses and jockeys in the United States through collaboration with international counterparts, including Britain.

She also mingled with officials from the Thoroughbred Transition Project, which gives racehorses a second start after injury or retirement for jumping, eventing, outriding and trail riding.

Queen Camilla then connected with guests representing the US Jockey Club, including thoroughbred breeders, owners and conservationists, and posed for a group photo before she headed out.

Queen Elizabeth, who also loved horses and riding, visited Virginia multiple times during her reign, stopping in cities including Jamestown, Richmond and Williamsburg. Though she never went to Middleburg, she spent time in Virginia and Kentucky’s “horse country.”

After Queen Elizabeth’s death in 2022, the Racing Post reported that Queen Camilla would be listed as a co-owner of the late monarch’s racehorses alongside King Charles, who inherited them.

In 2023, Queen Camilla shared that she was no longer horseback riding, telling a group of young students at an elementary school in Germany that she was now “too old.”

“I used to have horses I rode but sadly I don’t ride any longer,” she said at the time. “I think I’m too old but I have racehorses. Last night I watched on my screen one of the foals being born, which was very exciting.”

Though she’s no longer spending time in the saddle, Queen Camilla remains connected to horses and riding. In March, she attended a race at the Cheltenham Festival alongside Princess Anne and Anne’s equestrian daughter Zara Tindall.

Their four-day visit began on Monday, April 27, when they arrived in Washington, D.C. and were greeted by President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump. The next day, the King made history as only the second-ever British monarch to deliver an address to a joint meeting of Congress, and the royal couple also attended a lavish state dinner.

On Wednesday, April 29, the King and Queen stepped out for a series of engagements in New York City, including an afternoon visit to One World Trade Center to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, an outing at the New York Public Library and an arts reception.

On Thursday, April 30, the couple said farewell to the Trumps, paid their respects at Arlington National Cemetery and attended a block party in the small town of Front Royal, Virginia. From there, the couple split for separate outings —a visit to Shenandoah National Park for King Charles and the equestrian excursion for Queen Camilla.

The solo stops wrap the couple’s outings in the U.S., and the King will continue on to Bermuda for his first visit to a British Overseas Territory as sovereign.
